Hero by Asda Adult Dog Pouches in Gravy: With Poultry review

Every pouch here belongs to our Average band, and the four read level with one another, since they share an analysis and the same way of naming their animal content. The typical adult wet food is well clear of them in our Excellent band. What is interesting is that nutrition is not the weak point. Protein and fat convert high and the starch converts low, nutritional balance reads Outstanding, and it is the unnamed animal content that holds the placement down. This is a better-built recipe than its own label lets it prove.

Meat and animal derivatives leads every pouch, at 41% in the two veg recipes and 42% in the lamb and the poultry, and within that block the animal on the front is declared at 4%. In law the term covers the fleshy parts and processing products of warm-blooded land animals. That is a wide door: it can hold good meat, it can hold the leftovers, and the label reads the same either way.

Fish oil at 0.15% is the recipe's most useful small entry, bringing the long-chain omega-3s that support skin and coat. It also means that every pouch in the range contains fish. That detail matters not at all until it matters a great deal.

Chicory sits at 0.08% under derivatives of vegetable origin. Inulin comes from chicory root. It is a prebiotic, and the helpful gut bacteria live on it. That inclusion makes it a gesture towards digestive support, not a working dose.

The beef and the chicken pouches add a vegetable entry the other two go without, declared as 1.0% dried carrots and peas, equivalent to 6.4% before drying. Carrots bring carotenoids and soluble fibre, and peas add fibre with a range of vitamins. Both are welcome, though at that level they season the pouch and little more.

The analysis is the best thing about this range. Protein converts to 44.4% of dry matter and fat to 30.6%, both genuinely high for a wet food. Estimated carbohydrate is only 11.1% of dry matter where the typical adult wet food runs at 15.8%. Very little starch is doing the work; the pouch is mostly animal and water.

The added panel is thinner than the brand's tins manage, listing vitamin D₃ at 140 IU, vitamin E at 12 mg, zinc at 12 mg and iodine at 0.3 mg, and nothing further. The label prints no calcium figure. Various sugars closes each list, present to make the gravy more appealing.

Poultry at 4% of a 42% animal block, again with no vegetable entry. Poultry describes a family of birds rather than a species, so this pouch tells you less than the chicken one does, though it reads level with the other three.

Take a 15kg adult dog in moderate condition and about 840 kcal a day (110 × bodyweight^0.75, the standard maintenance estimate). These pouches meet that at roughly 988 grams, near enough ten of them, and about £2.36. The label's own guide asks less, 700g to 1100g for a dog of 10kg to 20kg.
