How do we compare dog food?

We score every dog food on protein and processing, nutritional balance, transparency and value, giving UK owners a clearer way to compare what is actually in the bowl.

01

Protein and processing

We measure how much of the recipe is meat or fish once the water is taken out, credit it by how honestly it is named, and weigh how gently it was made. Raw and fresh keep more than a high-heat kibble.

02

Nutritional balance

We read protein, carbohydrate and ash from the declared analysis on a dry-matter basis, so a tin and a kibble are judged fairly. Good nutrition is about the overall balance, not one number.

03

Transparency

Ten yes or no checks on the label: named species, printed percentages, named fats and preservatives, no unnamed flavours or colours, and dosages, moisture and energy declared. Vague labels lose marks.

04

Value

Value follows the score, so a food that feeds well reads as good value. Cost is compared per day of feeding rather than by the bag, so a dense food and a watery one are judged fairly.

Your dog deserves a better bowl.
