A puppy food has to say it is formulated for growth, or for all life stages. That declaration is the thing to look for. Growing dogs need more from their food than adults do, and a recipe that only claims to suit adults has not been built for the job.
If you have a large or giant breed, look for a recipe that names them. Big puppies grow for a lot longer than small ones, which is why so many brands run a separate large-breed puppy line.
