PetEat by Naked Dog: Feelin' Peckish (Chicken) review

Ingredients, as declared: Chicken with Bone, Chicken Heart, Chicken Liver (Total Chicken 80%), Green Vegetables, Carrot, Blueberries, Wheatgerm Oil, Salmon Oil, Kelp, Wheatgrass Powder

Each tub follows the same simple pattern: named meat and organs doing almost all the work, then a fresh fraction of green vegetables, carrot and blueberries. Carbohydrate is barely present, converting to between 0.0% and 11.0% of dry matter depending on the recipe, so the analysis matches what the lid promises.

Organ meats are the quiet strength here. Liver appears in every recipe, joined by heart in the two chicken-led tubs, lung in the beef, and tripe and kidney alongside the duck. Organs concentrate the vitamins and minerals a carnivore would naturally seek out first, which is exactly why raw feeders prize them.

There is no additive panel on any of these labels. The maker describes the range as a naturally complete food with no added premix. The meat and organs and kelp are left to supply the micronutrition, along with the rest of the whole ingredients. If you like your dog's food to be food all the way down, that is the appeal in a sentence.

Fish threads through the whole range, as salmon oil in three recipes and as whole white fish in the fourth, where it brings protein and bone as well as oils. Wheatgerm oil and wheatgrass powder also feature on every label; neither is the wheat grain itself, but the strictest wheat-avoiders will want to know they are present.

Calcium arrives with the bone ground into three of the recipes. The beef tub is deliberately bone free and uses egg shell powder to do the same job, a considerate option for dogs whose digestion has never made peace with bone.

Chicken with bone, heart and liver makes up 80% of the tub, and no other meat appears on the label. Only the salmon oil brings a trace of fish. It is also the lightest recipe of the four at 92 kcal per 100g, so portions run biggest here.

Every recipe comes as a 250g tub, and the four are also sold together as the 5kg PetEat Variety Box.

On the label's own guide, a 5kg dog takes 125 grams a day and a 15kg dog 375 grams. Take about 840 kcal a day for a 15kg dog in moderate condition (110 × bodyweight^0.75) as the standard estimate. Daily feeding then runs from 525 grams to 915 grams by recipe, with the lighter chicken tub needing the most. Let the waistline referee between the two guides.
