Within Puppy Dry review

Within Puppy Dry settles in our Average band, one step under the Good band where the typical puppy dry food sits. Transparency reads Good, nutritional balance Average and protein and processing Poor, which is a fair picture of the recipe. On one side is an itemised label with a properly declared calcium figure, on the other a protein total that leans on potato and pea to reach its number. It is a tidy, well-explained food that stops short of pressing hard on meat content.

Freshly prepared chicken at 26% opens the list. Fresh meat carries its water in with it, so the share that survives the cooker is smaller than the printed number suggests. That is the usual reason a fresh-meat headline and the finished protein figure never line up as neatly as an owner expects.

Sweet potato at 21.6% and whole oats at 12.3% carry the starch. Once cooked, oats are easily digested, and they bring fibre along with manganese and B vitamins. Their presence is what stops this being a grain-free recipe. Carbohydrate converts to an estimated 48.9% of dry matter against 39.0% for the typical puppy dry food, so the plant side of this bowl is doing plenty of the work.

Potato protein at 10% and pea protein at 6% follow, and they are the entries to understand properly. Both are inexpensive by-products of food processing and both push a protein figure upwards. For digestibility and amino acid profile, though, plant protein sits behind meat protein, and the total here converts to 27.2% of dry matter. Dried peas at 4% are whole peas and bring antioxidants and fibre alongside them.

On the growth question this label does exactly the right thing. Calcium is declared, and at 1.41% of dry matter it lands inside the band a developing skeleton wants. If your pup is heading for a large adult size, that is the figure you want printed on the label, not left to a claim on the front.

The functional tail is the most interesting stretch of the recipe. An inactivated Saccharomyces cerevisiae postbiotic at 0.4% sits with chicory root extract for FOS at 0.1% and mannan-oligosaccharides at 0.1%, both prebiotics that encourage friendly bacteria in the large intestine. A high nucleotide yeast at 0.1% joins them. A Bacillus velezensis gut flora stabiliser is dosed in the additive panel too, and brewer's yeast at 3% adds B vitamins on top of all that.

Salmon oil at 1% is the marine omega 3 in this bag, and a growing coat and brain both draw on it. It is also why a fish flag sits on a chicken food. Poultry, Oil at 5% is printed with no species at all. On a genuine exclusion trial, take the chicken headline as a preference and not a guarantee. The garnish at the end, from dried pumpkin and blueberry through to seaweed and spinach, sits at trace level and changes nothing about the bowl.
