Trophy Pet Foods Trophy Super Premium Grain Free: Duck & Vegetables review

66.8/100Good
DryPuppyAdult

Four grain free kibbles built on one blueprint, all in our Good band, with the duck and salmon at the front. The meal comes first on every list, and that dried meat is doing more of the carrying than the fresh meat behind it. The weight recipe swaps fat for starch to slim a dog down.

Our view

Likely to suit

  • Owners who prefer peas and potatoes on the list to wheat or maize
  • Dogs that need to shed a little: the weight recipe runs fat right down and still opens with a named meat meal
  • Small and medium dogs, the sizes the duck, salmon and turkey are built around
  • Older dogs with tired joints. Glucosamine and green-lipped mussel are on all four labels
  • A concentrated dried meat at the head of the list

Worth watching

  • Salmon oil in every recipe, so no fish free bowl
  • Chicken fat in all four, the duck and salmon included
  • No calcium figure on the three recipes that name puppies, a gap for a large breed pup

The score, in context
  1. Duck 66.8
  2. Salmon 66.0
  3. Turkey 63.9
  4. Weight Control 52.4

All four Good. Typical dry food: Good.

One construction across the four, so the gaps are narrow: duck edges salmon, turkey follows, and the weight recipe trails on protein and processing.

What's in it
  • Duck mealAlready dried, so its weight going in is near enough its weight in the kibble.
  • Peas, potatoesThe starch, where cereal would normally go.
  • Chicken fatThe main added fat, so chicken is in a duck recipe.
  • Freshly prepared duck35% total duckLoses most of its bulk in the oven.
  • Unmolassed beet pulp, sweet potatoes
  • Minerals, lucerne, full fat linseedLinseed adds plant omega 3.
  • Salmon oilThe marine omega 3 source.
  • Mint, fructose and mannan oligosaccharides, carrots, chamomilemin 44% total vegetablesThe vegetables figure counts the peas and potatoes.
  • Glucosamine, green-lipped musselNo dose in print. For an older dog the mussel is the more interesting of the pair.
  • Seaweed, milk thistle, aniseed, scullcap, comfrey, yucca, rosemary, blackcurrant, pomegranateTrace end of the list.

A full printed panel, with zinc at 135mg per kilo plus a further 38mg as a glycine chelate, the form a dog's gut copes with best.

Named for puppies, but no calcium figure is given for a large breed pup.

Against the range
Meat

39% on the salmon and turkey.
Carbohydrate, dry matter
40.0%
Lowest of the four; the weight recipe is 52.2%.
Size
Small dogs
Salmon and turkey are sized for medium dogs.

The least starchy bowl in the range and the leader on our scoring.

Every recipe opens with a dried meat meal and has a fresh helping of meat further down. Duck declares 35% total duck, salmon and turkey 39% each. Peas, potatoes and sweet potato do the binding, with unmolassed beet pulp for fibre, and the vegetables headline counts those starchy peas and potatoes.

Chicken fat and salmon oil run through all four, so neither chicken nor fish can be avoided anywhere in the range. Glucosamine and green-lipped mussel are on every label without a dose. Only the duck and salmon print their trace minerals.
