This recipe finishes in our Good band. The puppy dry field has its middle in that band as well, and this recipe clears the mark instead of merely matching it. All four pillars read Good, so the position comes from steady work across the whole label and not from one headline doing the lifting. What earns it is construction: a named meat first, a declared meat minimum, and a starch base of potato and sweet potato in place of cereal.

Chicken arrives here in two forms and the label adds them up for you, at a minimum of 44% total chicken. Chicken meal leads because it has already been dried, so its share reaches the finished bag largely intact. The freshly prepared chicken listed after the peas brings flavour and quality protein, though most of its weight goes in the oven. Chicken fat follows further down. Every animal entry in the recipe is that one bird.

Peas, potato, sweet potato and unmolassed beet pulp share the job cereals usually do, declared together at a minimum of 36% total vegetables. Sweet potato is the pick of them for a growing dog, richer in fibre and vitamin A than an ordinary potato. Grain free does not mean low starch, though. The carbohydrate estimate of 42.4% of dry matter sits a shade above the 39.0% typical of a puppy dry food.

The fats and the extras are where this one shows its thinking. Yucca schidigera, rosemary, blackcurrant and pomegranate close the list as seasoning, not substance. The rosemary is most likely a natural antioxidant, there to keep the fats fresh. The added panel is dosed in print, with L-carnitine at 330 mg/kg alongside a full vitamin and trace mineral set.
