Purizon Adult Cans: Game & Rabbit review

All four tins land in our Outstanding band and finish within a hair of one another. No tin is better made than the others, so pick the animal your dog prefers. These clear the middle of the adult wet shelf by a full band, and the analysis is why. Protein between 58.3% and 60.9% of dry matter with estimated carbohydrate no higher than 8.3% is remarkable for a wet food, off a list that is nearly all meat, broth and offal. Ingredients, as declared: 45% Chicken Fillet, 28.8% Broth, 10% Comprising Chicken Liver and Fat, 5% Game, 5% Rabbit, 3% Pumpkin, 2% Cranberry, 1% Minerals, 0.2% Salmon Oil.

The engine of all four tins is the same. Chicken fillet at 45% with broth at 28.8%, then 10% given to liver and other organ meat and 5% to the animal on the front. Chicken fillet is proper muscle meat rather than a category term. The broth is declared as broth and not hidden as water. That is a small mark of honesty.

That construction produces an analysis most wet foods cannot reach. Protein converts to between 58.3% and 60.9% of dry matter, with fat between 21.7% and 25.0%. Estimated carbohydrate stays between 5.9% and 8.3%. Adult wet food typically runs at 15.8%. No grain appears anywhere, and the starch amounts to one 3% vegetable per tin.

The offal earns its place. Liver carries more nutrition than almost anything else a dog can eat, rich as it is in vitamin A, B12, copper and iron. Hearts, lungs and gizzards are the working muscle a wild diet would have supplied. Naming them and weighing them is what a careful label looks like.

The tin names need a word of explanation. Black Angus appears as lung and heart at 5%, game and rabbit at 5% each, lamb as lung and hearts at 5%. They are accents, and chicken is the substance of the recipe. That is ideal if chicken suits your dog, and no help at all if it does not.

Salmon oil at 0.2% closes each list and brings the omega-3 oils with it. The added minerals are printed with doses: zinc at 25mg, copper at 1.5mg, manganese at 1.4mg and iodine at 0.75mg. Vitamin E runs at 20 IU throughout, with vitamin D3 at 200 IU on the Black Angus Beef & Turkey tin.

Chicken liver and fat at 10%, then game at 5% and rabbit at 5%. That is the most unusual pairing Purizon offers here, and pumpkin at 3% is a vegetable no other tin uses. At 112 kcal per 100g it is the richest of the four, with fat converting to 25.0% of dry matter.

As a guide, a 15kg adult dog in moderate condition would eat between 750 and 800 grams a day depending on the tin. The target there is about 840 kcal a day (110 × bodyweight^0.75, the standard maintenance estimate). That is one 800g can, or two 400g cans with a little left in the second.
