Salmon in first place does most of that work, declared at min. 27% fresh and min. 10% as meal, and the label helps itself further by putting a figure against entries as small as 0.16%. Its transparency pillar reads Outstanding on the strength of that. The brake on it climbing higher is easy to see: rice at min. 30% and maize third put carbohydrate at 53.2% of dry matter, and the fat comes from a bird rather than the fish on the front of the bag.

The salmon is declared in both its forms and in the right order, min. 27% freshly prepared ahead of min. 10% salmon meal. Cooking drives the water out of the fresh share, so the meal carries much of the load in the finished kibble, and at min. 10% it has been given enough to do it with. Protein converts to 25.0% of dry matter and fat to 12.0%.

For a dog that has reacted its way through the poultry aisle, fish is the useful protein, simply because most dogs have met it far less often. Salmon also brings its own omega 3s in the marine form, the one a dog's body can use for skin and coat without having to convert it first. The 0.16% salmon oil entry adds a measured top-up.

The hypoallergenic name is worth reading properly. It means a recipe built without the usual triggers rather than a food that cannot cause a reaction, and here that means no wheat and no red meat. Rice at min. 30% and maize behind it carry the starch, which puts carbohydrate at 53.2% of dry matter against the 46.2% typical for an adult dry food.

Chicken fat is the honest complication. It is named, not hidden as an anonymous animal fat, and the label deserves credit for that. A poultry fat in a fish recipe does mean this cannot be the sole food in a strict single-species trial. For everyday feeding of a dog that simply does better on fish, it changes very little.

Seaweed at 0.2% brings iodine and trace minerals. The mannan oligosaccharides at 0.16% are a prebiotic, and the large intestine is where they do their work. Glucosamine and green-lipped mussel handle the joints without a printed dose between them. The mineral panel is dosed in full, with a chelated zinc entry at 14mg alongside 176mg as the sulphate. A dog generally absorbs the chelated form more readily.

As a guide, a 15kg adult dog in moderate condition needs about 234 grams a day, working from roughly 840 kcal a day (110 × bodyweight^0.75, the standard maintenance estimate). That comes to £1.07 a day. Trophy's own chart puts the same dog at 213 grams. Settle the gap by eye and by waistline.
