Two readings pull against each other here and our Good band is where they meet, alongside the middle of the adult dry shelf. In its favour, the analysis is the strongest in the Lifestyle line. Protein converts to 27.2% of dry matter, fat to 17.4%, and carbohydrate to 43.4%, below the 46.2% typical for an adult dry food. Against it, maize takes first place, the beef is declared at min. 23% and one entry, prairie meal, names nothing at all. For a dog that genuinely works, this is the pick of the Lifestyle bags. Treat the herbal tail as a nice extra and not the reason to buy it.

Maize first and beef meal at min. 23% second is the frame of this recipe, with salmon at min. 8% arriving fourth. Beef meal is dried and concentrated, so its declared share largely survives cooking, and the salmon is the reason the analysis carries as much fat as it does. Between them, protein converts to 27.2% of dry matter and fat to 17.4%, both at the top end for a kibble of this kind.

Prairie meal needs a straight answer from the label and does not get one. The label prints the name and stops, with no species and no source beside it, so it is impossible to say from the packaging what it brings. Every other animal entry is named properly, so the gap stands out all the more.

Oats and barley sit behind the maize as the softer cereals, easy to digest once cooked and carrying fibre and trace minerals with them. Unmolassed beet pulp adds the steadying fibre. The yeast brings mannan oligosaccharides, a prebiotic that the gut flora feed on. The overall carbohydrate share of 43.4% of dry matter is the lightest in this line.

The joint side of this label is doing more than the usual gesture. Glucosamine and green-lipped mussel are the familiar pair. Devil's claw root behind them is a genuine surprise, a southern African plant with a long history in easing stiff joints that rarely appears in dog food. Not one of the three prints a dose, so the strength of that support is left unstated.

The herbal tail keeps going after that, through nettle, burdock, dandelion, celery seed and comfrey. Herbal practice treats these as bitters and diuretics. They are here at trace level, and no recipe is transformed by that much. Seaweed brings iodine and a spread of minerals, rosemary guards the fats from turning, and blackcurrant and pomegranate finish the list off as antioxidant seasoning.

A working dog on a long day will need more than the quiet one.
