The Pack Plant-Based Healthy Meals – No-Moo Ragu

The Pack

The Pack Plant-Based Healthy Meals: No-Moo Ragu review

53/100Good
WetAdult

A complete vegan range in three 375g cans, all in our Good band, written for homes where meat is off the menu. Where it earns its place is the supplement panel: the amino acids a meat-free bowl can run short of are added with a printed dose. Algal oil supplies the omega 3 that would normally come with fish.

Our view

Likely to suit

  • Dogs that react to several animal proteins. No meat, fish, dairy or egg appears on these labels
  • Households feeding plant-based by conviction, who want a complete food
  • Owners who read supplement panels: taurine at 400 mg and DL-methionine at 1000 mg per kilo, in print
  • Smaller dogs on a measured portion, at 118 kcal per 100g against the 97 typical of adult wet food
  • Grain-free kitchens, where peas, lupin beans and squash carry the starch

Worth watching

  • Lupin beans, a legume related to peanuts and soya
  • Fibre at 8.0% of dry matter, so expect stools to change in the first week or two
  • Talk to your vet before moving a dog onto a meat-free diet; the printed doses help that conversation

The score, in context
  1. No-Fishy Dishy 53.3
  2. No-Moo Ragu 53.0
  3. No-Cluck Casserole 52.9

All three Good. Typical wet food: Excellent.

The three finish level, since they share an analysis, and the gap to the typical wet food is the meat question more than any shortfall in care.

What's in it
  • Pea protein8%A concentrate from pea processing that lifts the protein figure. Less complete and less digestible for a dog than meat.
  • Lupin beans5.4%Same family as peanuts and soya.
  • Papaya, blackberries3.5%, 3%Fruit, fully itemised.
  • Sunflower oil2.9%The main fat; low in saturated fat and carries vitamin E.

  • Brewer's yeast2.1%B vitamins, and a protein carrying all nine essential amino acids.
  • Rosemary, thyme, chamomile and nine more herbs, chicory rootchicory 0.1%Trace level. Chicory brings inulin, a prebiotic fibre.
  • Minerals, hemp, pumpkin and sunflower seedsseeds 0.67% each
  • Vegetable broth, apple extractapple 0.5%
  • Algal oil0.04%Long-chain omega 3 from the source fish get it from.

The sweetest of the three.

Every recipe is built on the same base: pea protein at 8%, lupin beans at 5.4%, papaya at 3.5%, sunflower oil, brewer's yeast and a run of seeds. Algal oil brings the long-chain omega 3. The three share one analysis, with protein at 40.0% of dry matter and fibre at 8.0%, high for wet food. Only the berries, the vegetables and one minor extra change from can to can.

The supplement panel is identical across the range, with taurine, methionine, lysine and L-carnitine each printed with a dose. The herb list is the same on every can, at trace level.

Price and value

Each recipe comes in 375 g cans, sold in boxes of 6, 12, 18 and 36. We did not hold a checked figure for what this range sells for when this was written, so no per-kilo or per-day number appears here.

For portioning, a 15kg adult dog in moderate condition needs about 712 grams a day, assuming around 840 kcal a day (110 × bodyweight^0.75, the standard maintenance estimate). These cans are energy dense for wet food, so that is a smaller daily bowl than most wet feeding asks for.
