Terra Canis

Terra Canis Hypoallergenic Wet Food: Ostrich with parsnip review

81.1/100Outstanding
WetAdultSenior

One meat and one vegetable to a tin, which is what a vet's instruction to strip the diet back looks like when it is canned. The animals are antelope, horse, kangaroo, ostrich and water buffalo. Ostrich and water buffalo reach our Outstanding band, the other three Excellent.

Our view

Likely to suit

  • Exclusion diets: one named animal and one named plant, nothing else of animal origin
  • Dogs that have run into trouble with the everyday meats
  • A label you can take in at a glance. None runs past seven entries
  • Weeks on one food, with the B group dosed individually
  • Pitching the fat exactly, from the lean kangaroo to the rich horse

Worth watching

  • Changing tins changes the diet more than the shared recipe suggests
  • The antelope list ends on the word nutrients
  • No calories declared on any label, so the energy figures are our estimates

The top of the range; the horse is 33.5%.
Fat, dry matter

Mid-range, between 11.2% and 40.8%.

The most conventionally balanced of the five, and an easy first tin to try.

Every tin is built the same way: 60% muscle meat from one animal, 36% of one vegetable, linseed and rapeseed oil, seaweed and the minerals. Nothing on any of the five lists comes from a second animal, and both oils are plant oils, so no fish or unnamed fat goes near the recipe.

What varies is the animal and the vegetable, and the analysis swings with them. Protein runs from 33.5% of dry matter on the horse to 55.6% on the ostrich, fat from 11.2% on the kangaroo to 40.8% on the horse.
