Skinner's Field & Trial Puppy & Junior: Rich In Lamb & Rice review

52.6/100Good
DryPuppy

Two puppy and junior recipes in our Good band that reach the job by different routes. The duck bag leads on meat meal at 28.1%; the lamb bag puts brown rice first at 39.3% and lamb meal second. Both print a dose against every supplement they name, which plenty of growth foods still do not.

Our view

Likely to suit

  • Pups through the junior stretch, both bags labelled for puppy and junior together
  • A meat away from chicken, with duck heading one recipe and lamb the other
  • Owners who want extras quantified. Glucosamine at 250mg/kg and chondroitin sulphate at 150mg/kg are on both
  • Busy growers and steadier ones: 388 kcal per 100g on the duck, 348 on the lamb
  • Puppies comfortable on rice and oats

Worth watching

  • No calcium figure on either pack, so large-breed growth cannot be planned from the label
  • Unnamed poultry fat in both, which rules out a strict single-meat plan
  • The lamb recipe's meat share is much the lighter of the two

The score, in context
  1. Duck 60.8
  2. Rich In Lamb 52.6

All two Good. Typical dry food: Good.

Neither has a single fault; modest meat for a growth food and a cereal base doing more of the work keep both from climbing, and the duck has the stronger balance.

What's in it
  • Brown rice39.3%First on the list, ahead of the meat.
  • Lamb meat meal15.5%Dried, so read straight. A real gap against the duck.
  • Pea proteinLifts the protein total without matching meat for quality. Its place in the list is the honest signal.
  • Naked oats
  • Whole linseed, brewer's yeast
  • Poultry fatUnnamed species, so not lamb only.
  • Peas, sunflower meal, dried egg
  • Beet pulp, vitamins and minerals, cellulose
  • Marine algae mealMarine omega 3 without fish.
  • MOS, FOS, herb blend, glucosamine, chondroitin sulphate, seaweed, yucca2500mg/kg down to 100mg/kgEvery one dosed.

The same doubled trace panel as the duck, with taurine and vitamins A, D3 and E, and clinoptilolite clay among the technological additives.

No calcium figure on the pack, the number a large-breed owner most needs.

The easier of the two on a pup already carrying enough condition, though a hungry one needs a fuller bowl.

Both bags use a dried meat meal, so the printed share carries into the kibble much as stated, and both build on brown rice and naked oats. Poultry fat with no species named is the added fat in each, whole linseed and marine algae meal supply the omega 3, and beet pulp and cellulose the fibre.

The supplement tail is shared and dosed line by line, from MOS at 2500mg/kg to yucca at 100mg/kg, with trace elements given twice over as plain salts and chelates. Neither label prints calcium.

Lighter energy means a fuller bowl than the duck recipe for the same pup.

Budget end of the market, though you pay a little more than the analysis shows.
