Salubrious Healthy Dog Food Cold-Pressed Slim Down: Turkey review

Our reading puts Slim Down in our Good band, the same band that typifies cold-pressed food. The name is doing honest work. Energy is an estimated 324 kcal per 100g where the cold-pressed median is 351, and crude fibre reaches 5.0% of dry matter, so a smaller bowl still fills a dog up.

The trade appears in the other columns. Protein converts to a fairly restrained 26.1% of dry matter and carbohydrate reaches 50.1% against a cold-pressed norm of 43.2%. Protein and processing reads Good and so does value, transparency reads Outstanding and nutritional balance Average, and the result is a sensible everyday weight food rather than a high protein one.

Ingredients, as declared: Turkey (30%), sweet potato (27%), potato (20%), salmon protein (5%), goose fat (5%), whole egg (5%), beet pulp, cane molasses, brewer's yeast, vitamins and minerals, liver gravy, prebiotic (inulin), alfalfa, salmon oil, sunflower oil. Herbal blend (0.25% chicory root, parsley, thyme, nettle leaf, rosemary, camomile leaf, sage, yucca extract, rosehip, dandelion leaf, turmeric, aniseed). Glucosamine (0.1%), green lipped mussel (0.05%) chondroitin sulphate (0.05%).

Cold-pressed pellets are compact, and that is worth knowing on a weight recipe. A measured portion looks smaller in the bowl than the same weight of an airy extruded kibble. Weigh it and do not scoop it, especially in the first fortnight when everyone in the house is still adjusting.

Turkey at 30% leads the list, a lean meat with a long record in lighter recipes, and it is backed by salmon protein at 5% and whole egg at 5%. Goose fat at 5% supplies the fat, and at least that is a named bird and not an anonymous animal fat, though it does mean a turkey recipe carries two birds and a fish.

Fibre is the mechanism the recipe leans on. Gut bacteria work on beet pulp, a fermentable fibre, the prebiotic inulin is named openly on the label, and chicory root turns up again inside the herbal blend. Crude fibre reads 5.0% of dry matter, which is what allows the printed portions to come down without the dog feeling short changed.

Sweet potato at 27% and potato at 20% still carry the energy, and carbohydrate lands at 50.1% of dry matter. That is the honest limitation of this recipe: the calories are lower than the cold-pressed norm, but the composition behind them is a starch led one rather than a protein led one.

The finishing entries are the same generous set the brand uses across the range. The herbal blend is printed at 0.25% and holds a dozen plants. The joint ingredients are quantified too, glucosamine at 0.1% with green lipped mussel and chondroitin sulphate at 0.05% each, and they are welcome on a food for dogs whose joints are already carrying extra.

£5.50 a kilo. Bags run to 12 kg and 3 kg, with a roughly 250 g sample on offer as well.

On the standard maintenance estimate a 15 kg adult dog in moderate condition needs about 840 kcal a day (110 × bodyweight^0.75). At an estimated 324 kcal per 100g that works out at roughly 259 g, or £1.43. Salubrious's own chart is deliberately tighter than that, putting a 15 kg dog on 220 g, since a weight recipe is meant to be fed below maintenance.
