The Lamb & Rice Performance recipe finishes in our Good band, level with the middle of the adult dry category. The Working Dog Active sits in our Average band, and the Maintenance and Premiwm rations in our Poor band. That spread is almost entirely about what each label is willing to say. On the lamb recipe you get the meat, the grain, the fat and the supplements by name. The analysis holds up too: protein converts to 29.3% of dry matter, fat to 16.3% and estimated carbohydrate to 41.3%, under the 46.2% typical for an adult dry food. The other three declare categories instead of ingredients, and two of them print a fat level well below what a dog working all day gets through. As working rations sold on simplicity they feed dogs every day of the week. As labels, they tell you very little.

The Lamb & Rice Performance recipe is the fully written one. Lamb at 39% leads, rice at 26% and barley carry the starch with potato starch binding, and lamb tallow supplies the fat, which means every animal entry on the label comes from the same animal. That is rare on a working shelf and genuinely useful for a dog who has been narrowed down to one meat.

Its supporting cast is thought through as well. Brewer's yeast brings B vitamins and a complete protein. Flaxseed adds plant omega 3s. Seaweed brings iodine and a range of trace minerals. Glucosamine and chondroitin come next, then prebiotic MOS, then yucca extract and cranberry to finish. Pea protein is the one entry to read with a raised eyebrow, since plant protein counts towards the declared 27% without matching meat protein for quality.

Working Dog Active is written in trade shorthand. Extruded cereals and flaked cereals stand in for the grain, meat products for the animal share, and the fat arrives as animal fats and vegetable oils, with pasta and fish meal behind them. Fish meal is the one entry that says what it actually is, and the marine oils it brings are a real contribution. Nothing else on that list tells you which animal or which grain is in the bowl.

Working Dog Maintenance and Working Dog Premiwm share the same four entries, cereals, meat and animal derivatives, oils and fats and minerals, and differ only in the analysis printed against them. Terms that broad cover everything from good grain and good meat to the plainest versions of both. With nothing pinned down, the mill can swap what goes in without altering a word of the label.

Where the numbers land is worth knowing before you choose. Maintenance declares 19% protein and 6% fat with estimated carbohydrate at 60.8% of dry matter. Premiwm declares 23% protein and 7% fat at 51.1%, and Active 25% protein and 10% fat at 51.5%. The typical adult dry food sits at 46.2%. The lamb recipe stands apart from the three at 27% protein and 15% fat. If the dog on the end of your lead is genuinely working all day, that fat figure is the first one to check.

Fish meal is the one named animal entry here, sitting behind meat products. Extruded and flaked cereals plus pasta carry the starch, and the fat comes from a mix of animal fats, vegetable oils and linseed oil. It declares 25% protein and 10% fat, the strongest analysis of the three Working Dog rations, and its energy figure is an estimate. Neither moisture nor calcium appears on the label.

Per kilo, Working Dog Maintenance is £1.80, Working Dog Active £1.87, Working Dog Premiwm £2.00 and Lamb & Rice Performance £3.75. Maintenance and Active come in 15kg bags, Premiwm in 2.5kg and 15kg, and the lamb recipe as a trial pack, 2kg or 12kg.

Set the target at about 840 kcal a day for a 15kg adult dog in moderate condition (110 × bodyweight^0.75, the standard maintenance estimate). That works out at roughly 268 grams and £0.48 a day on Maintenance, 248 grams and £0.46 on Active, 276 grams and £0.55 on Premiwm, and 237 grams and £0.89 on the lamb recipe. A dog doing a real day's work will eat well above that estimate, and the label tables run higher again.
