Josera SensiPlus review

Our scoring settles Josera SensiPlus in the Good band, in the thick of the adult dry category and nowhere near either edge. The label does several things properly. The meat protein is broken into named shares, and carbohydrate converts to 42.8% of dry matter against the 46.2% typical of adult dry food. Zinc and copper arrive as glycine chelates, not as plain inorganic salts. What holds it where it is: rice leads the list, and a good part of the animal material gets a family name in place of a species.

Ingredients, as declared: rice; poultry protein (dried) (poultry 11.0 %, duck 10.0 %); poultry fat; potato protein; salmon (dried) 4.0 %; poultry protein (hydrolysed); beet fibre; plant fibre; carob meal; minerals; yeast; chicory root (ground, natural source of inulin); psyllium husks; New Zealand greenlipped mussel meat (Perna canaliculus), dried.

Rice takes the first slot, so most of the kibble starts there, and it is a sensible grain to choose for a dog with a temperamental gut. It cooks down easily and carries none of the gluten questions that follow wheat around. The animal side arrives dried rather than fresh, so no cooked-out water hides inside the headline. The poultry protein is declared as poultry at 11% and duck at 10%, with dried salmon adding another 4%.

Protein converts to 27.5% of dry matter and fat to 20.9%, which makes this a richer bowl than most adult kibbles, and energy lands at 403 kcal per 100 grams. Carbohydrate estimates out at 42.8% of dry matter, a shade under the 46.2% typical for the category, so the rice is doing its job without taking the recipe over.

The digestion story is told in the small entries rather than the headline. Beet fibre and plant fibre give the large intestine something to work on, and chicory root brings inulin, which feeds the bacteria you want living down there. Psyllium husks add a soluble fibre that helps a loose stool firm up. Yeast and carob meal round the group out.

Dried New Zealand green-lipped mussel is the last name on the list and the most interesting one. It is a shellfish traditionally chosen for stiff joints, and it usually turns up on foods carrying a far longer ingredient statement than this. Taurine at 1000 mg per kilo and L-carnitine at 250 mg per kilo are both dosed in print. Zinc and copper come as glycine chelates, which a gut handles more easily than plain salts.

The honest limitation is the word poultry. Duck is pinned down at 10%, but the rest of the bird content, including the fat and the hydrolysed protein, carries only the family name, which could mean chicken, turkey or goose. Most dogs will never care in the slightest. It only becomes a live question when you are running an elimination diet and need every species accounted for.

As a guide, feeding a 15kg adult dog in moderate condition works out at about 208 grams a day, assuming around 840 kcal a day (110 × bodyweight^0.75, the standard maintenance estimate). That comes to roughly £0.60 a day. The label's own table, which reads for a less active or senior dog, asks 75 grams at 10kg and 125 grams at 20kg, and the waistline settles the difference.
