James Wellbeloved Adult Superfood – Lamb with Sweet Potato & Chia

James Wellbeloved

James Wellbeloved Adult Superfood: Lamb with Sweet Potato & Chia review

52.3/100Good
DryAdult

A competent everyday bowl for an ordinary adult dog, with a better than average plant list on top. The superfood extras are real and each has a percentage printed beside it: sweet potato and chia in the lamb, kale and quinoa in the turkey. Both sit at the lower end of our Good band.

Our view

Likely to suit

  • Owners who want the fashionable extras quantified
  • A toy, a giant or anything between, from one recipe
  • Steadier dogs with modest energy needs and a gentle fat level
  • Dogs that thrive on rice
  • A short list with nothing on it you cannot place

Worth watching

  • Small headline plants: chia at 0.1%, kale and quinoa at 2% each
  • Fish oil and poultry fat in both, so neither is fish free or single animal
  • Estimated carbohydrate past the 46.2% typical for adult dry food on both bags
  • No glucosamine or chondroitin for an older dog's joints

The score, in context
  1. Turkey 54.2
  2. Lamb 52.3

All two Good. Typical dry food: Good.

The plant names on the front were never going to move the score much at these percentages, and the rice-heavy shape underneath decides it.

What's in it
  • Dried lamb protein23.5%Declared dried, the more honest way to print it.
  • BarleySecond on the list, and only in this bag.
  • Brown rice, white rice18%, 17.7%More of the bag than the meat.
  • Poultry fatNo bird named, and the reason this is not a lamb only bag.
  • Whole linseed3.9%Plant omega 3, which a dog converts slowly.
  • Sweet potato3.9%A genuine ingredient, not a garnish.
  • Lamb gravy, sugar beet pulp, alfalfa mealBeet pulp with its sugar already extracted.
  • Minerals, seaweed0.5% seaweedIodine and trace minerals.
  • Fish oilThe ready made omega 3s for the coat.
  • Chia seeds, chicory extract, yucca extract0.1%, 0.1%, 0.02%Chia is a flourish beside the linseed.

Zinc as a glycine chelate, with selenium as sodium selenite and tocopherols preserving.

Dried lamb protein, 23.5%
Dried turkey protein, 23.3%, on the other.
Carbohydrate, dry matter

51.0% on the turkey.
Protein, as fed

Grain
Barley with the two rices
Naked oats with more rice on the turkey.

The one to try if poultry has worn thin at home, though the poultry fat is still on the list.

Both bags lead with a dried meat protein at a little under a quarter of the recipe, declared dried so the figure does not shrink in the oven. Brown and white rice together outweigh the meat. Whole linseed and fish oil do the omega work, poultry fat sits in both, and sugar beet pulp, alfalfa, seaweed, chicory and yucca are shared. What differs is the named plants and the second grain: barley in the lamb, naked oats in the turkey.
