Harringtons Dry Small Adult: Rich In Lamb & Rice review

The two bags do not land together: turkey reaches our Good band, the same ground the typical adult dry food holds, while lamb settles a step below in our Average band. The analysis is respectable for the type, with protein at 27.2% of dry matter and fat at 13.0%, and rice at 21% is unusually well declared for a food built this way. The familiar things hold the reading level. Only 6.5% of the 26% meat share is named, maize protein lifts the protein figure without adding animal content, and no calcium figure appears. Across both bags, protein and processing and nutritional balance read Average, while transparency reads Outstanding. It is a sensible, undramatic food for a small dog in good health.

Meat and meat meals open the list at 26%. The bag's front names 6.5% of that as dried meat. Freshly prepared chicken turns up at 4% further down. Meat meal is a dried and concentrated protein source, and nothing about the material itself is second-rate, but most of that 26% arrives without a species attached to it.

Rice at 21% is the standout on the plant side, and it is good to see a figure printed against it rather than a bare word. Maize and barley follow, then maize protein. That last one is a concentrated plant protein: it lifts the protein reading on the analysis without adding anything animal to the bowl, so the 25.0% headline is not all meat-derived.

Protein converts to 27.2% of dry matter and fat to 13.0%, with carbohydrate estimated at 44.0% as fed and 47.9% of dry matter, marginally above the 46.2% typical for adult dry food. Energy is 373 kcal per 100g, which keeps a small dog's portion genuinely small.

Poultry fat is the main added fat and poultry gravy at 0.5% is the palatant, and neither says which bird was involved. The omega 3 here is the plant form, out of linseed. The fibre work falls to beet pulp, with crude fibre declared at 2.5%.

The list closes with three modest and well chosen entries. Seaweed at 0.1% covers iodine, dried chicory at 0.1% brings inulin for the gut bacteria to feed on, and odour is what the yucca extract at 0.01% is for. The vitamin and mineral panel is dosed in print, with vitamin D3 at 1,500 iu and vitamin E at 150 mg. Zinc is at 75 mg, with iron and manganese at 50 mg each and copper at 5 mg. Iodine comes in at 0.5 mg and selenium at 0.1 mg.

Calcium is not declared. On an adult small breed food that is a minor omission rather than a real one, since the figure matters most while a big puppy is growing.

Dried lamb at 6.5% is the named meat, and lamb is the only red meat anywhere in the recipe, sitting alongside the 4% freshly prepared chicken that both bags carry. Everything else, from the 21% rice down to the yucca extract, matches the turkey bag line for line, and so does the analysis.

The label's own guide asks 50 to 120 grams a day for a dog between 1kg and 5kg, and 120 to 190 grams for a dog between 5kg and 10kg. On the standard maintenance estimate a 15kg dog would take about 225 grams a day (110 × bodyweight^0.75, or roughly 840 kcal), though that is well above the size this recipe is written for.
