Forthglade

Forthglade Complete Grain Free Senior: Turkey review

76.8/100Excellent
WetAdultSenior

Flavour

Forthglade's lighter wet meal for older dogs, with both recipes in our Excellent band. Where most senior claims stop at a word, this one prints a figure for glucosamine and chondroitin. The trays are light on energy, so an older dog eating less still gets a full meal's worth of bowl.

Our view

Likely to suit

  • Older dogs stiffening at the joints
  • Dogs that have gone off richer food. The lamb is an estimated 94 kcal per 100g, the turkey 98
  • Grain-avoiding homes, with squash and peas as the only starch
  • Settling a sensitive gut: chicory root extract at 0.45% is there as a prebiotic
  • A reluctant drinker, since the lamb is 78.0% moisture

Worth watching

  • Salmon oil puts fish on both labels, so neither is a one-animal food for an elimination trial
  • Ash is high for wet food, up to 20.0% of dry matter on the turkey
  • Seaweed carries no percentage, which matters if you are watching iodine closely

The score, in context
  1. Lamb 78.4
  2. Turkey 76.8

All two Excellent. Typical wet food: Excellent.

A printed joint dose and a deliberately light calorie count still finish only a shade behind Forthglade's adult trays, which is a solid showing for a senior recipe.

A slightly drier tray with a touch more protein, for the dog that prefers poultry.

Both trays are built the same way: one meat at 60%, then butternut squash at 6%, carrots and peas at 4% each, with no cereal. Salmon oil and linseed oil at 0.15% each, chicory root extract, seaweed, a named herb blend and yucca make up the tail.

Glucosamine and chondroitin are printed at 100 mg/kg on both, and the vitamin and trace mineral panel is identical, with zinc and copper chelated to glycine. What varies is moisture, fat and carbohydrate.
