Chudleys Greyhound Trust Pet Greyhound: Fish review

Both flavours land in our Average band, a step short of the Good band where the typical adult dry food sits, and they get there by the same road. Both read Poor on protein and processing and on nutritional balance, their wheat-led lists doing that, while transparency comes back Good on each and value Average. The breed thinking is genuine either way, and for a settled ex-racer with no sensitivities the food does what it sets out to do.

Ingredients, as declared: Maize, salmon (min 16%, a source of omega 3 fatty acids), oats, prairie meal, rice, chicken fat, yeast (source of mannan oligosaccharides), minerals, peas, full fat linseed, white fish, unmolassed beet pulp, seaweed, devil's claw, green lipped mussel (750mg/kg), blackcurrant, rosemary (total herbs 0.4%), pomegranate, rosehips, yucca schidigera, beetroot. Natural antioxidants.

The two flavours stand on different foundations. The Chicken recipe opens with wheat and backs it with maize and wheat feed, the last of these being grain that fell short of human-food standards. Its meat is a poultry meal guaranteed at a minimum of 16%, with chicken gravy at 4% for flavour. The Fish recipe leads with maize but names its animal properly: salmon at a minimum of 16%, supported by white fish further down.

Both keep the analysis deliberately gentle, with protein at 19% and fat at 10%. A retired greyhound carries very little body fat and no longer trains, so a moderate feed makes sense. The trade is that carbohydrate is estimated at 58.6% of dry matter, well above the 46.2% typical of adult dry food.

The joint provision is the label's best feature. Green lipped mussel is dosed at 750mg/kg, a meaningful amount of a natural joint-support ingredient. Devil's claw is a genuinely uncommon inclusion, a desert herb with a long history in easing stiff joints. For a breed that spent its first career at full sprint, that emphasis is well aimed.

Chicken fat appears in both recipes and salmon oil in the Chicken flavour, so each flavour name describes only the lead ingredient. Unmolassed beet pulp and seaweed round both lists off, along with the usual Chudleys berry tail from blackcurrant to yucca.

Salmon at a minimum of 16% with white fish in support names its animal where the Chicken names a category, though its pillars land exactly where the Chicken's do. Chicken fat is still on the list, so this is a fish led recipe and not a chicken free one.

The Chicken flavour is £2.14 a kilo in a 14kg sack, the Fish £2.50 a kilo in a 12kg sack.

On the standard maintenance estimate of about 840 kcal a day for a 15kg adult dog in moderate condition (110 × bodyweight^0.75), that is roughly 247 grams daily. It comes to £0.53 on the Chicken and £0.62 on the Fish. The label's sole-feed table covers dogs from 10kg to 45kg, the upper reaches of which fit most greyhounds.
