Butternut Box – You've Got Game

Butternut Box

Butternut Box: You've Got Game review

82.4/100Outstanding
FreshPuppyAdult

Gently cooked meals, portioned to the dog and delivered frozen, with ten of the eleven in our Outstanding band and Salmon to Love just behind in Excellent. What marks the range out is how the meat is written: heart and liver named inside it on most labels. The mineral panel is almost all chelates.

What Butternut Box costs

Our view

Likely to suit

  • Dogs kept to one protein. Several recipes hold the meat share to a single named animal
  • Owners who want organ meat included and spelled out
  • Fussy eaters. Gently cooked food holds far more aroma than anything extruded at high heat
  • A home with some freezer room. The pouches arrive frozen and thaw in the fridge overnight
  • Puppies and older dogs as much as adults. Every recipe is listed for all three
  • Dogs that do better with some grain. Rice, pearl barley and quinoa each turn up in the range

Worth watching

  • Grain in three recipes, while the other eight leave it off
  • Chelates of protein hydrolysates on every panel. A strict elimination trial cannot treat any recipe as truly single-species
  • Salmon oil in the Duo of Duck and Chicken, so that one is not fish free
  • No calcium figure on any label. Ask Butternut before a large-breed puppy grows on it

A novel protein for a dog that has reacted to everything ordinary.

Ten recipes declare a 60% meat share and the Game 50%, every animal named to species, with no unnamed meat or fat on any label. Where two species share a bowl, each gets a minimum percentage. Carrot leads the plant side on nearly every recipe, with red lentils, split and whole, giving most of them body.

Three carry a grain: wholegrain rice in the Duo of Chicken with Salmon, pearl barley and quinoa in Pork of the Town and Tuck in Chicken. Moisture runs from 69.0% to 74.0%. In dry matter, protein spans 35.5% to 46.4% and fat 13.5% to 33.3%.
