Butchers Loaf Recipes Can: With Beef, Wholegrain Rice & Carrots review

The beef and the chicken land in our Excellent band, with the lamb recipe a band behind them in Good. Since the analysis panel is identical on all three, that difference comes from how the meat is divided rather than from anything you would taste. The middle ground of wet food falls in our Excellent band, and wet is a strong category with us. Two of the three keep level with that middle, and the lamb sits just under it.

Protein converting to 40.0% of dry matter and an animal list where every species carries a percentage are what hold them up. The two added oils, the rice and a carbohydrate estimate above the wet norm are what keep them from climbing, along with the liquid that the ingredients list never accounts for.

Ingredients, as declared: British & Irish Farmed (Chicken 27%, Beef 15%), Cooked Wholegrain Rice 4%, Carrots 4%, Salmon Oil, Sunflower Oil, Parsley, Rosehip, Chicory, Mint, Minerals.

British and Irish farmed meats open every can with the animals named and given percentages, and in each case chicken is the largest of them. The beef can runs chicken 27% and beef 15%; the chicken can runs chicken 31% and beef 11%; the lamb can adds lamb at 4% behind chicken at 30% and beef at 8%. Read that way, this is a chicken range with a changing second meat rather than three separate recipes.

The single cereal is cooked wholegrain rice at 4%, joined by carrots or peas at 4%. Cooked carrot digests easily and carries useful fibre and antioxidants, and whole peas bring a spread of vitamins and minerals with them. At these percentages neither is doing much beyond adding a little body. The estimated carbohydrate of 21.5% of dry matter comes out by difference, and the maker does not print it.

Salmon oil and sunflower oil are what make this a loaf. Sunflower oil is one of the kinder plant oils, with little saturated fat in it and vitamin E of its own, while salmon oil brings the marine omega oils. Neither carries a percentage, and both put fish and seed oil in the bowl. If you are keeping either out, that is the thing to know.

The tail of the list is trace-level: parsley, rosehip, chicory and mint, with minerals closing it. Chicory root is the interesting one, since the inulin in it acts as a soluble fibre that gut bacteria feed on. It is a small, sensible addition.

The added panel is short and fully dosed, with vitamin A at 1250 I.U. and vitamin D3 at 250 I.U. alongside zinc at 20 mg, manganese at 2.5 mg and iodine at 0.5 mg. Much of the micronutrition in a can this meat-heavy comes from the ingredients themselves, so a short printed panel is not the same thing as a thin recipe.
