Brit Care Dog Sustainable Senior review

The Good band is where this recipe finishes, level with the typical adult dry food. It is built as a gentle food, so the win comes from execution rather than richness: named protein sources, printed supplement doses and a calorie level that respects an older dog's slower burn.

Ingredients, as declared: chicken (32%) (dehydrated chicken, hydrolysed chicken), oats (30%), dehydrated insect (14%), dried apple pulp, lignocelluloses, chicken fat, natural flavour, brewer's yeast, salmon oil (2%), pea flour, glucosamine (260 mg/kg), fructo-oligosaccharides (200 mg/kg), chondroitin sulphate (200 mg/kg), mannan-oligosaccharides (150 mg/kg), Mojave yucca (150 mg/kg), milk thistle seed (90 mg/kg), β-glucans (50 mg/kg), dried motherwort (50 mg/kg), dried sea buckthorn (50 mg/kg), Lactobacillus helveticus HA - 122 inactivated (15x109 cells/kg).

Chicken at 32% is supplied dried and hydrolysed, so the declared share is not inflated by water that would vanish in cooking. Protein converts to 26.7% of dry matter, restrained on purpose for a senior maintenance recipe, and fat to just 12.2%.

Oats at 30% plus lignocellulose push estimated carbohydrate to 48.6% of dry matter, a little above the 46.2% typical of adult dry food. That is the deliberate trade of a senior formula: energy eases off while the bowl stays satisfying. The lignocellulose deserves a plain description; it is a refined, essentially calorie-free plant fibre used to add bulk, effective at the job even if it sounds more like forestry than food.

Dehydrated insect at 14% remains the range's second animal protein and its sustainability case, farmed with a fraction of the resources conventional meat requires.

The senior extras are dosed in print. Glucosamine at 260 mg/kg and chondroitin sulphate at 200 mg/kg address ageing joints. L-tryptophan, generously dosed among the additives, supports the serotonin pathway often linked with settled behaviour. Taurine at 1,500 mg minds the heart, and L-carnitine at 250 mg helps the body use fat for fuel, useful when the metabolism slows.

Prebiotics, an inactivated probiotic and chelated, dosed trace minerals complete the panel. At trace level, the customary Brit tail brings sea buckthorn, motherwort and milk thistle.

Priced at £5.00 a kilo and sold in 1kg, 3kg and 12kg bags.

A 15kg adult dog in moderate condition would get through about 246 grams a day at a cost of about £1.23, assuming 840 kcal or so daily (110 × bodyweight^0.75, the standard maintenance estimate). The label's own table asks 140 to 190 grams for dogs between 10kg and 15kg, and an older, slower dog may well need less than the estimate, so feed to condition.
