Brit Fresh Chicken with Sweet Potato review

Placement here comes from disclosure and construction pulling in the same direction. Transparency reads Outstanding and protein and processing Excellent, with nutritional balance Good. The label earns that by naming its animals and printing a figure against every line, and the meat share stays high. Our Excellent band is a crowded place, since the wet category does well on our scoring, and this recipe finishes near the front of it.

Ingredients, as declared: 48% chicken, 28% turkey, 11% broth, 4.5% sweet potatoes, 2% apples, 2% minerals, 1.3% buckwheat, 1% blend of herbs (rosemary, thyme, marigold, dandelion), 1% salmon oil, 0.5% parsley, 0.5% linseed, 0.2% algae and black currant

Chicken at 48% and turkey at 28% are the foundation, with broth at 11% poured over them. Turkey is the leaner of the two birds and chicken the more reliably palatable, and together they take protein to 32.0% of dry matter and fat to 26.0%. That is a rich, poultry led analysis.

Sweet potatoes at 4.5% carry most of the starch, and they are a good choice for the job. They have more fibre than an ordinary potato, and they are an excellent source of vitamin A. The release is gentler than a plain white starch too. Apples at 2% and buckwheat at 1.3% sit behind them. The estimated carbohydrate reads 29.2% of dry matter against 15.8% for the typical adult wet food, though as always on a wet analysis that number is a calculation by subtraction rather than a measurement.

The fats are named and they are useful ones. Salmon oil at 1% and linseed at 0.5% both carry omega 3, the fish oil in the form dogs make the most of, and there is no unnamed animal fat anywhere on the list.

Rosemary, thyme, marigold and dandelion make up the 1% herb blend at the tail of the label, and parsley, algae and black currant sit below that. Rosemary earns its place by doubling as a natural antioxidant that helps keep the fats fresh, and the rest of the tail is a flourish. The added vitamins and trace elements are each printed with a dose, and calcium converts to 1.2% of dry matter, which sits comfortably for a growing dog as well as a grown one.
