This recipe lands in our Average band, a step below the Good band the typical adult dry food occupies. The main reason is structural: named animal protein is what a general-nutrition reading rewards, and a food with none starts at a disadvantage however carefully it is built. Taken on its own terms, the analysis is respectable, with protein at 27.5% of dry matter and carbohydrate at 45.7% against a typical 46.2%, and the supplementation is genuinely thorough.

Sweet potato at 12.97%, oat flakes at 12.4% and peeled peas at 12.2% share the lead, an unusually precise set of declarations. Potato protein at 8% and pea protein behind it raise the total protein to 25%. That is the recipe's central trade: plant protein concentrates are consistent and easy to standardise, but a dog's gut extracts less from them than from meat. The declared figure works a little less hard than the same number would on a meat-led label.

The amino acid support is where the recipe earns respect. Methionine is added at a substantial declared dose, taurine and L-carnitine both appear, and between them the trio covers the nutrients a meat-free bowl would otherwise run short of. The vitamin D3 is a vegan form, a detail plant-based labels often miss.

The PhytoPlus blend is a long parade, from algal DHA and coconut oil through turmeric and ashwagandha to reishi mushroom. The DHA is the entry doing real nutritional work, supplying the marine omega 3 dogs usually get from fish, this time grown from algae. The rest is seasoning at trace levels, pleasant but not the point.

Calcium is declared at 0.99% of dry matter, a comfortable adult level, and the recipe finishes with a live probiotic alongside its prebiotic chicory and yeast, a pairing aimed squarely at digestive comfort.

The trace minerals arrive largely chelated, and the selenium comes as selenised yeast rather than the more common selenite, a form generally absorbed more readily.

£7.70 a kilo when we checked. The main bag is 10kg, with a smaller size also sold.

For a 15kg adult dog in moderate condition the recipe works out at around 238 grams and £1.83 a day, taking the usual maintenance figure of about 840 kcal (110 × bodyweight^0.75) as the basis. The label's own chart says 266 grams for the same dog, so start between the two and let the waistline decide.
