Our current picks of dog coats and jackets

16 picks, updated 16 September 2026

A dog coat has one job, which is to keep a dog comfortable enough to enjoy the walk, and fit is what decides whether it does that job well. Measure first and the rest follows.

Every coat here is one we would buy. There are lined coats for the cold, shells for the wet, light layers that go under either and cooling vests for hot days. They differ in how they fasten and how they work with a harness underneath.

Our picks

  1. 1Ancol Muddy Paws Stormguard Coat

    Why we picked it

Two jobs in one coat, with a waterproof surface over a cosy fleece lining. The details are the reason it stays put: an elasticated neck, elasticated leg straps and a chest protector that keeps the front of the dog clean and dry. The harness slot zips shut between walks. On sale since 2013 and backed by more owner reviews than any other coat we picked.

  2. 2Poseca Dog Coat with Built-in Harness

    Why we picked it

Poseca build the harness into the coat, so the dog goes out in one piece of kit and you fasten one thing. Four adjustable buckles set the fit and a D-ring sits on the back for the lead. The dog steps in and the back zip closes, with a buckle at the top to hold it. Poseca say the outer is wind and water resistant over cotton padding and a fleece lining.

  3. 3IECOii Extra Warm Turtleneck Dog Coat

    Why we picked it

The collar is a proper turtleneck with a drawcord, so it covers the neck and the base of the ears as well as the shoulders. Hidden elastic straps loop round the back legs and keep the coat straight on a dog that runs. A quick release buckle under the belly sets the fit, and the harness hole on the back takes the lead. IECOii line it with coral fleece.

  4. 4LeLePet Warm Dog Coat, fleece lined

    Why we picked it

A polyester shell over a soft fleece lining, with a thick fur collar covering the neck where a short-coated dog feels the cold first. LeLePet say the fabric is windproof and waterproof. It wraps on with hook and loop and a safety buckle, and an opening on the back lets a lead reach a harness underneath. Reflective strips run along it for dark afternoons.

  5. 5Jacko & Co Fleece Vest Sweater with Lead Ring

    Why we picked it

This is the layer for the in between days, when a padded coat is more than the weather asks for. It pulls on over the head with nothing to zip or buckle, which is the quickest way to dress a dog. The fleece is thin enough to go under a waterproof when the afternoon turns, and a built in ring on the back takes the lead.

  6. 6Lorehelina Cable Knit Jumper, two pack

    Why we picked it

A jumper a small dog wears daily spends half the week in the wash, so this comes as a pair and one is always clean. The cable knit acrylic has enough stretch to pull on over the head, and the turtleneck covers the neck. The belly is cut high, which keeps it cleaner on a wet pavement. It is thin enough to layer under a raincoat.

  7. 7Rosewood Joules Burra Raincoat

    Why we picked it

This is the coat that looks like a coat, and it suits a dog walking the same wet field twice a day. Rosewood make it under the Joules name, a British high street label. The shell is water resistant, so it sheds a shower and adds a layer of warmth on a cold walk. It goes in the machine at 30 degrees, which matters once the mud arrives.

  8. 8Rosewood Joules Henson Check Packaway Jacket

    Why we picked it

The packaway is the whole idea. It folds into a compact pouch that lives in a coat pocket or a car door, which is how a raincoat actually gets used here. There is a hood for the worst of it and adjustable hook and loop fastenings for the hurry. Joules say the fabric is durable and water resistant, and the Henson check keeps it looking like clothing.

  9. 9Spark Paws Hooded Dog Raincoat

    Why we picked it

This one runs from an adjustable neck wrap over the shoulders down to the tail, so the chest and neck stay dry along with the back. The hood sits clear of the eyes, and Spark Paws say the Breatheshield fabric lets heat escape while keeping rain and wind out. Side buckles do the fastening. Sizes run from XS to 4XL, which covers a lot of dogs.

  10. 10Mikki Doodles Full Body Raincoat

    Why we picked it

Mikki cut this one for doodles, and that shows in the shape as much as the name. It is a full four legged suit with sealed seams, so the legs and belly come home dry. The lining is silky to reduce the friction that knots a curly coat on a wet walk. It adjusts at the neck, waist and legs, takes a lead through the back and has a sanitary opening.

    Why we picked it

Sized by back length, this dog cooling vest runs from a 20 cm back on the extra small to 35 cm on the large. SIMPLY4PETS make it in a lightweight PVA that they list as water resistant, with reflective detail for darker evenings. The blue is easy to pick out against grass. Those back measurements put it squarely with small and medium dogs.

    HugglePets

    Cable knit jumper, four sizes

    Why we picked it

This cable knit dog jumper has a short sleeve fit, which HugglePets say leaves a full range of motion on walks. Four sizes are listed by back length, from 30 cm to 50 cm, in mulberry, navy or khaki. The fabric is fleece and the maker describes it as super soft. Some dogs feel the cold indoors as much as out, and this is for them.

    Why we picked it

Pet Living size this dog cooling vest by body girth, at 50 cm, 66 cm and 85 cm across the three options, with lengths of 27 cm to 38 cm. Reflective detail catches the light once the evenings draw in. It goes on as a vest, so there is little fuss at the front door. A match for a dog who walks late on warm days.

  15. 15Unbranded Padded waterproof winter coat with lead ring

    Unbranded

Padded waterproof winter coat with lead ring

    Why we picked it

A polyester shell takes the rain on this waterproof dog coat, and the inside is fleece over a soft padded layer. The seller lists good belly coverage, so wind and snow reach less of the underside on a winter walk. A ring sits on the back for a lead to clip through. Five sizes are listed, from small up to double extra large.

It comes in nine colours, among them light blue, black and grey, and four sizes are listed from small to extra large. Fleece holds warmth without adding weight on the body. Useful for a dog who wears something most winter mornings.

Questions people ask

How do I measure my dog for a coat?

Take the back length along the spine from the collar to the base of the tail, then the chest girth round the deepest part behind the front legs. Each maker leads on a different measurement, so read their chart before choosing a size.

What if my dog is between two coat sizes?

Most makers suggest sizing up, which gives the shoulders room to move. A coat that runs slightly long stays comfortable through a long walk, and the straps take up the rest of the fit.

Are dog coats machine washable?

Most are. Padded coats generally wash cool and air dry, and the label on each one confirms the temperature. Hanging a shell to dry is what keeps its waterproof face working season after season.

How do I know a dog coat is warm enough?

Watch the dog rather than the label. A dog that has stopped shivering, walks at its normal pace and is happy to stand still is warm enough. If the walk is long and still, a thicker layer earns its place.
