Years Chef's Collection: British Spring Lamb Shepherd's Pie review

55.2/100Good
FreshPuppyAdult

Fresh food written like a restaurant menu and labelled like a serious one. Four of the five trays reach our Outstanding band; the Shepherd's Pie lands in Good. Every ingredient carries a percentage, and each tray prints its calcium and phosphorus per kilo.

Our view

Likely to suit

  • Owners who want to read a proper recipe, every ingredient measured
  • Dogs that have met the everyday meats. Wild boar, wagyu, king prawn and giant squid are all here
  • Fussy dogs, as gently cooked food looks and smells like a meal
  • Puppies, adults and seniors, all listed for every tray
  • Anyone who likes the mineral side printed per kilo

Worth watching

  • Four of the five mix two or more animals
  • Fromage frais puts dairy in the lasagne
  • The trays need fridge or freezer room before the first delivery

The published analysis does not line up with this recipe, so the ingredient list is the truer guide.

Every tray but the lasagne mixes animals.

A sound-looking recipe held down by a label analysis that does not fit it.

Every tray names and percentages each ingredient, organs included: lamb heart, beef lung, pork heart and beef kidney all appear by name. Starch comes from roots and flours, parsnip, swede, sweet potato, yuca flour and tapioca, and there is no wheat in any of them.

Each tray prints a per kilo nutrient table, with calcium between 4003mg and 4497mg and phosphorus between 2172mg and 2604mg. Three add taurine. Only the lasagne keeps to one animal, and pink Himalayan salt turns up on three labels.
