Wainwright's Large Breed Mature Dry Food review

This one earns our Good band while running leaner than most of what surrounds it on the shelf, where the typical adult dry food reads Good as well.

Fat is held at 9.0% and protein still converts to 27.5% of dry matter. That is precisely the combination an older large dog wants: enough to hold muscle, not so much that the weight creeps on. Carbohydrate at 50.2% of dry matter runs above the 46.2% that is typical, and beet pulp at 6% pushes fibre to 4.2% of dry matter. Both suit a slower gut better than a young one. Transparency reads Outstanding on the pillars and value Good, protein and processing and nutritional balance read Average, and the whole picture is of a sensible senior food that says what it contains.

Turkey makes up 33% of the recipe as 28% dried turkey and 5% freshly prepared, and that ratio is what you want to see. Weigh freshly prepared meat and most of what you have is water. The oven removes it, and the dried share is what actually arrives in the bowl. Turkey is also a sound choice for an older dog on its own merits, being easy to digest, leaner than chicken and palatable enough to keep an ageing appetite interested.

Rice at 26% and whole grain barley at 21% carry the plant side, with whole ground oats at 4.5% behind them. Both grains cook down to something a dog digests readily, and they bring fibre and micronutrients along. Keeping the grain whole holds on to more of that than refining it would. Barley carries gluten, so the trade is worth knowing about if you avoid it.

The fibre is the quiet story on this label. Beet pulp at 6% is a generous inclusion, supplying both the soluble and insoluble kinds, and it takes crude fibre up to 3.8%. An older dog's digestion often benefits from exactly that, and dried peas at 3% contribute a little more alongside their antioxidants and vitamins.

The joint pair is printed with figures rather than implied by a picture on the front: glucosamine at 0.05% and chondroitin at 0.015%. Both turn up naturally in cartilage and bone. Every meat-based food carries traces because of that, and adding them deliberately at a stated level is what a big older dog can genuinely use. The clinical evidence is mixed, so read them as steady daily support and not a remedy.

Taurine at 1000mg is the other addition worth noticing. Most dogs produce this amino acid for themselves. The evidence points to a benefit where heart trouble is a concern, and that question comes up more often in the big breeds and more often again as they age. Declaring it with a number is better than a vague nod to heart health.

The added fat is rapeseed oil. As plant oils go it stands comparison with the rest, and it keeps the recipe to one animal. The omega 3 here is plant form, from whole linseed at 2%. No fish appears anywhere on the label. Dried carrots at 1% stand for roughly 8% fresh carrot, and seaweed at 0.2% brings iodine along with a spread of minerals. Every one of the added nutrients carries a dose: vitamin E at 150mg, zinc at 50mg, iron and manganese at 40mg each, copper at 5mg, iodine at 1mg and selenium at 0.1mg.

As a guide, a 15kg dog in moderate condition would take about 259 grams a day, assuming around 840 kcal a day (110 × bodyweight^0.75, the standard maintenance estimate). That works out at roughly £0.86 a day. A large senior gets through a good deal more. The bag's own table asks 300 to 465 grams at 25kg to 45kg of dog. An older one is usually happiest at the gentler end of a range like that.
