Tails.com Example Recipes Adult Hypoallergenic: Tailored Blend For Cocker Spaniel review

64.2/100Good
DryAdult

Worked examples of a Tails.com hypoallergenic blend written for a named breed, all five in our Good band. Chicken meal leads every list, a concentrated protein that does not shrink in the oven, and there is no grain and no fish on any of them. The second meat is named only as poultry.

Our view

Likely to suit

  • Owners of a Bichon Frise, Cocker Spaniel, Labrador, Rottweiler or Staffie, who get the blend written for their breed
  • Dogs kept away from fish. Linseed does the omega 3 work
  • Chicken eaters, since the chicken package is the largest declared share every time
  • A dog that does better with no cereal at all
  • Stiffening joints, with glucosamine and chondroitin in all five

Worth watching

  • Poultry named by family only, so a strict elimination plan cannot count on chicken alone
  • No printed amount for the glucosamine or chondroitin
  • Added salt, which matters for a dog with a heart or blood pressure history

The score, in context
  1. Tailored Blend For Cocker Spaniel 64.2
  2. Tailored Blend For Staffordshire Bull Terrier 64.2
  3. Tailored Blend For Bichon Frise 63.6
  4. Tailored Blend For Labrador Retriever 62.7

All five Good. Typical dry food: Good.

The construction barely moves, so the spread is narrow; the breed on the bag should decide it, not the order they finish in.

  • Poultry: poultry meal, poultry fat, poultry gravy8%Named only as a family: chicken, turkey, duck or goose, never saying which.
  • Beet pulpSlow fermenting fibre that firms a stool.
  • LinseedThe omega 3 source, with no fish oil.
  • Minerals and vitamins, dried seaweedSeaweed for iodine.
  • Salt

Built to the same specification as the Staffordshire Bull Terrier blend, so the pair read alike on paper.

Every blend leads on a chicken package of meal, offal, fat and gravy, declared from 33% to 40%, with a second entry named only as poultry at 7.6% to 8.2%. Sweet potatoes and potatoes do the binding, with no wheat, maize or rice on any list. Linseed carries the omega 3 and there is no fish anywhere.

What moves between blends is the chicken share, which climbs as the dog gets smaller. Protein runs from 27.1% to 30.0% of dry matter, and carbohydrate from 45.6% to 50.0%.
