There is a clear drop between where the typical adult wet food finishes, which is inside our Excellent band, and where this loaf finishes, which is Average. Almost all of it is accounted for by what the pack chooses not to say. Nutritional balance reads Outstanding here and transparency Good, while protein and processing reads Average, held down by the naming: no animal, no grain and no proportion is ever put in writing.

It is important not to hear that as alarm. This is a mainstream senior wet food from a maker with a serious research record, sold through vet practices and pet shops alike, and dogs do perfectly well on it. Our score simply reflects how much of the recipe an owner is allowed to see, and the answer on this pack is very little.

Start at the top and the pattern is set immediately. Meat and animal derivatives is a legal shorthand for the fleshy parts and processing derivatives of warm blooded land animals. It is broad enough to describe first rate material and thoroughly average material in identical words. It leads the list, so the animal content outweighs everything else, and that is genuinely all the pack commits to.

Cereals, oils and fats and derivatives of vegetable origin follow the same convention, none of them tied to a source. Between them they supply the starch that gives a pâté its structure and a good share of the added fat. Yeasts close the list, a small entry that brings B vitamins and a savoury note an older dog with a fading nose may appreciate.

The analysis is where this pack does well. Once the water comes out, protein reads 42.0% of dry matter and fat 27.5%. That is rich for a wet food, and useful for an older small dog who is eating less than she used to. The cereals carry a bit more of the loaf than usual without dominating it: carbohydrate is estimated at 20.0% of dry matter against 15.8% for the typical adult wet food. At 94 kcal per 100g it sits just under the 97 kcal the typical adult wet food carries, which is useful when appetite is small.

Additives are printed with figures attached. Vitamin D3 comes in at 170 IU per kilo and vitamin C at 70 mg. Then come iron at 9 mg, iodine at 0.24 mg, copper at 1.9 mg, manganese at 2.7 mg and zinc at 27 mg. Clinoptilolite at 2 g per kilo is a mineral clay used as a technological aid, working on the loaf itself rather than on the dog.

The picture that emerges is a competent, energy dense senior loaf described in the vaguest permissible language. If your dog is comfortable and bright on it, the numbers on the back support that. If you like to know what you are putting in the bowl, this is the one thing the pack will not give you. Decide how much that matters to you before you settle in.

That works from roughly 840 kcal a day (110 × bodyweight^0.75, the standard maintenance estimate) and 94 kcal per 100g, which is around 892 grams of food.
