The pouch lands in our Average band. Wet food generally does well on our scoring and the typical adult wet meal reaches our Excellent band, so this sits a good way back from the middle of the shelf. That distance is made almost entirely of unknowns. Our pillars want to know what is in the food, where it came from and how much of the pouch it fills, and this label answers little of that. Protein and processing settles at Average and transparency at Good, even as nutritional balance reads Outstanding.

A low placement is no health warning, and that is worth saying plainly. Royal Canin manufactures to a tight specification and a great many small dogs live long, comfortable lives on its food. Our score measures what can be checked by the person holding the pouch, and checking is precisely what this wording prevents.

Ingredients, as declared: meat and animal derivatives, cereals, oils and fats, derivatives of vegetable origin, minerals, yeasts.

Meat and animal derivatives is the first thing named and the least informative. The term is defined broadly enough to cover the fleshy parts of any warm blooded land animal, along with the derivatives of processing a carcass. It can therefore describe good material and unremarkable material equally well. What it cannot do is tell you which animal your dog ate this week, and nothing further down the list fills that gap.

Cereals sits second and is equally open ended, then oils and fats and derivatives of vegetable origin follow, both of them umbrella terms in their own right. In a gravy product a share of that plant material is doing structural work, thickening the sauce and holding the morsels in shape. That is one reason the carbohydrate estimate here reaches 20.2% of dry matter against the 15.8% typical of adult wet food.

The analysis is the part you can rely on. Protein converts to 40.2% of dry matter and fat to 27.5%, a moderate and easy going profile that suits a small dog with a small appetite. Crude fibre converts to 4.2% of dry matter, a touch more than a plain meat pouch would carry, which again points at the gravy.

Every additive here comes with a dose attached, more than many wet labels manage. Vitamin D3 is at 160 IU per kilo and vitamin C at 30 mg. Iron runs at 9 mg, iodine at 0.23 mg, copper at 1.9 mg, manganese at 2.8 mg and zinc at 28 mg. Clinoptilolite at 2 g per kilo is there as a technological aid and adds nothing nutritionally.

So the pouch gets its job done. It gets food into a fussy small dog, it keeps portions sensible, and the analysis underneath is perfectly sound. The one thing it will not do is show its working, and if that matters to you, it will keep mattering every time you open a box.

For comparison, a 15kg adult dog in moderate condition would need roughly 969 grams a day at 87 kcal per 100g. That works from about 840 kcal a day (110 × bodyweight^0.75, the standard maintenance estimate) and lands at around £11.17. Pouches this small are built for far smaller dogs, so that figure is a shelf comparison rather than a household total.
