Ouzil Steak review

Our reading places this in our Outstanding band, with protein and processing, transparency and value all reading Outstanding alongside it. A single named meat and nothing else in the tub is about as clean as a composition gets. The fresh shelf it stands on is a strong one, with the typical fresh food in that same band. On its own terms, no bowl gets cleaner than this.

Ingredients, as declared: 100% grass fed beef

One line is the entire composition: 100% grass fed beef. Grass fed is a farming claim, not a nutritional one, though it does tend to travel with better fat quality. Beef itself is among the most digestible and most enthusiastically received meats a dog can be handed.

The analysis reads lean. Protein comes in at 24.5% as fed against 5.1% fat, with ash at 1.1% and moisture declared at 69.3%, and the energy figure of 172 kcal per 100g is measured, not estimated. Because the label prints no fibre figure, there is no carbohydrate estimate and no dry matter conversion to make, so the table stays exactly as the label gives it.

The micronutrients arrive as a natural dusting rather than a vitamin panel: sunflower and pumpkin seeds, dried blackberry, nettle, seaweed, sage, thyme, reishi and organic spirulina. Ground egg shell at 0.3g per 100g does the calcium work. Seaweed is the iodine source, and reishi and spirulina are the sort of inclusions a maker reaches for when it wants nothing synthetic on the label at all.

Portions come at 200g, which makes them easy to think in, one for a small dog's day and several for a big one. Depending on weight, the guide on the label runs from 50g up to 600g. Nothing is bulking the tub out, so what you weigh is meat and only meat.

£37.50 a kilo. It is sold as a single 200g portion or as a pair of them.

As a guide, a 15kg adult dog in moderate condition would work through around 488 grams a day, assuming about 840 kcal a day from the usual maintenance estimate of 110 × bodyweight^0.75. That comes to £18.31 a day.
