Miraculous Meals Adult Tins: Salmon & Turkey review

All three tins land in our Excellent band, separated by so little that the choice really comes down to which animals suit your dog. Nutritional balance reads Outstanding on all three, with transparency Excellent and value Excellent across them. Protein and processing is Excellent on the poultry and the fish tins and a step up at Outstanding on the lamb and beef. That is the shape a label gives you when it names everything and pushes no single number to an extreme: two quantified animals, a real but modest vegetable share, and a prebiotic and herb tail. We score adult wet food well as a category, and its typical member reaches the same band these do. What Miraculous Meals adds over the middle of the shelf is a list you can read from first word to last.

The composition is written in groups, and every group opens itself up. Meat is two species at 30% each, the vegetables are named individually with percentages, the fruit likewise, and even the superfoods line puts 0.1% against the herbs and 0.02% against the turmeric. Not one category term appears on these labels, and that is what sets them apart from most of the tinned shelf.

The prebiotic group is the interesting one. MOS at 0.1% comes from yeast cell walls, and chicory root at 0.5% carries inulin. Both are there to feed what lives lower down the gut. Yucca at 0.02% follows them, usually included to soften stool odour. These are small inclusions, and they are the kind of small inclusion that earns its place.

The analysis is even across the three. Protein converts to between 40.4% and 45.7% of dry matter and carbohydrate to between 11.2% and 16.5%, with the typical adult wet food at 15.8%. Energy runs from 112 to 128 kcal per 100g against a typical 97, so daily amounts will look much as an owner used to wet food expects.

The added vitamin and mineral panels are dosed but they are not consistent between the tins. Zinc at 25 mg and manganese at 1.4 mg per kilo appear on all three, vitamin D3 at 200 I.E. on two of them, and copper at 1 mg with iodine at 0.75 mg on two. Whether that is a genuine formulation difference or a printing one, the labels do not say.

Salmon and turkey at 30% each, with peas and sweet potato at 3% each, beetroot at 1% and seaweed at 2%, and the oil here is salmon oil rather than a seed oil. Protein converts to 43.3% of dry matter, and of the three tins this is the one for a fish loving dog.

£6.94 a kilo, in 400g tins. A case holds twelve tins, or twenty four, or thirty six.

For a 15kg adult dog in moderate condition, feeding works out at about £4.55 a day on the Lamb and Beef and about £5.21 on the other two. That is roughly 656 to 750 grams, assuming around 840 kcal a day (110 × bodyweight^0.75, the standard maintenance estimate). That comes to between one and a half and two tins a day.
