James Wellbeloved Adult Large Breed Dry: Turkey & Rice review

The lamb, turkey and chicken settle in our Good band, where the adult dry shelf has its midpoint, and the fish sits a step under them in Average. This is a conventional, dependable kibble. The shape of it is easy to see on the label: a dried meat protein at roughly a quarter of the recipe, with three cereals behind it. In the two varieties that publish an analysis, the carbohydrate estimate sits close to the 46.2% typical of adult dry food. The lamb finishes strongest of the four, although the three that share our Good band are close enough together that the meat your dog prefers is the better guide.

Ingredients, as declared: dried turkey protein* (25%), naked oats*, brown rice* (13%), white rice* (13%), poultry fat*, barley*, whole linseed* (3.5%), turkey gravy, sugar beet pulp*, pea fibre*, alfalfa meal*, pea protein, seaweed* (0.5%), minerals, fish oil, nettles*, parsley*, chicory extract* (0.1%), glucosamine (0.045%), yucca extract* (0.02%), chondroitin (0.005%). *Natural ingredient.

The dried meat protein at the head of every bag is the concentrated form, not the fresh one. In the oven fresh meat loses most of its weight to water, so a fresh headline flatters the finished kibble. A dried headline needs no such discount. Dried chicken protein at 24%, dried fish protein at 22%, and dried lamb and dried turkey protein at 25% each are therefore doing real work in the bowl.

The starch side is a blend of cereals, not a single grain. All four carry 13% brown rice and 13% white rice, with naked oats and barley filling in behind, and each grain brings a slightly different fibre and micronutrient profile. Barley does carry gluten, and that matters only when gluten is being kept out of the bowl. Carbohydrate is estimated at 47.7% of dry matter in the chicken recipe, and at 46.3% in the fish, both within touching distance of the 46.2% typical for adult dry food.

Big dogs push more weight through their joints, and the label answers that directly. Glucosamine at 0.045% and chondroitin at 0.005% are printed on all four bags. Whole linseed is the plant source of omega 3, 3.5% of the chicken recipe, 3.7% of the fish, while fish oil brings the marine forms a dog uses more readily. Supporting amounts, plainly declared, are the right thing to find on a food written for large frames.

The smaller entries all do sensible jobs. Sugar beet pulp is the fibre source, its sugar already extracted during processing, so it feeds a steady gut rather than a sweet tooth. Alfalfa meal and pea fibre add more bulk fibre, seaweed at 0.5% covers iodine, chicory extract at 0.1% supplies inulin as a prebiotic, and nettles and parsley sit at trace level as seasoning. Meat gravy gives the kibble the taste of the animal on the front.

Two honest limits are worth stating plainly. Poultry fat keeps its bird to itself, and fish oil sits in every recipe, so none of these bags is a clean single protein option for an elimination plan. And the lamb and turkey labels stop short of a full analysis, so what we can show for those two is the energy figure and the ingredient list rather than a protein and fat breakdown.

Dried turkey protein at 25%, with naked oats ahead of the two rices and barley sitting lower down the list than it does in its siblings. Energy is 371 kcal in every 100g, and as with the lamb the label stops short of a full analysis, so the table carries the energy figure by itself.

£3.80 a kilo across all four varieties. Chicken and fish come in a 15kg bag, and lamb and turkey are sold in 10kg and 15kg.

A 15kg adult dog in moderate condition takes around 840 kcal a day (110 × bodyweight^0.75, the standard maintenance estimate). That works out at about £0.86 a day on the chicken, fish and turkey, and £0.87 on the lamb. These bags are written for far bigger dogs than that, of course, and the chicken label asks 285 to 315 grams a day for a 25kg dog.
