Devini Wet Food: Chicken & Lamb review

All three recipes hold our Excellent band. There is barely anything between them, so the choice comes down to which animal your dog enjoys most. On our scoring wet is strong ground, and a typical adult wet recipe already earns an Excellent band place. Keeping pace with that mark is a real achievement, not a modest one. What earns the placement is construction: meat at the top of every list with a figure attached, and nothing cereal based underneath. The fruit or vegetable is measured in single figures and it never does the heavy lifting. Nutritional balance and transparency read Outstanding on every recipe, protein and processing reaches Excellent on two of the three, and value keeps step with the overall placing in Excellent. This range earns its place on what goes into the tin.

Ingredients, as declared: Turkey 65%, Apples 3%, Pumpkin 2%, Minerals, Safflower Oil, Seaweed, Yucca Extract, Green-Lipped Mussel (Source of Glucosamine and Chondroitin).

Every recipe opens with its animal and a number beside it. One list runs turkey at 65%, another chicken at 35% with wild boar at 30%, and the third turkey at 50% with trout at 15%. Protein converts to between 42.9% and 48.1% of dry matter, which is a meat led analysis by any wet standard.

The plant side is kept deliberately small. Apples, pumpkin, spinach, broccoli and carrots appear at 3% and 2%, and nothing starchier joins them. Carbohydrate converts to between 9.0% and 19.6% of dry matter, against 15.8% for the typical adult wet food. Working it out by difference means it absorbs anything the analysis leaves unnamed.

Safflower oil on one recipe and linseed oil on the other two carry the added fat, linseed bringing plant omega-3 with it. Seaweed does the quiet mineral work and covers iodine. Yucca extract is a long standing addition credited with taking the edge off what the garden has to deal with afterwards.

Green-lipped mussel closes each list as the stated source of glucosamine and chondroitin. No dose is printed beside it. Read it as a friendly extra to the dinner, and a dog already given something prescribed for the joints should carry on with that as well. The mussel is also why fish belongs on all three labels.

Every entry in the short added panel carries a figure: vitamin D3 at 200 IU, zinc at 25 mg, manganese at 1.4 mg and iodine at 0.75 mg on two of the recipes. Turkey with Trout swaps in copper at 1 mg and drops the vitamin D3, which is worth a glance if you keep an eye on one particular nutrient.

Sold as Chicken & Lamb, though the ingredients we hold declare turkey at 65% as the meat, with apples at 3% and pumpkin at 2% behind it and safflower oil for the added fat. It is the richest of the three at 114 kcal per 100g, so portions run smallest here.

£16.35 a kilo across all three recipes. Pots are 85 g, sold on their own or in packs of 12.

As a guide, feeding a 15kg adult dog in moderate condition works out at between £12.09 and £14.77 a day depending on the recipe. The basis for that is about 840 kcal a day, from the standard maintenance estimate of 110 × bodyweight^0.75. That corresponds to roughly 739 to 903 grams.
