This recipe takes our Average band, one step behind the Good the typical adult dry food manages. Read the pillars and the pattern is plain: protein and processing at Average, dragged down by anonymous poultry naming and unquantified cereals, with nutritional balance Average alongside it and transparency Outstanding. Nothing in the analysis should trouble a healthy large adult, and the joint and carnitine additions genuinely target the right dog. It is the naming, not the feeding, that holds it back.

Ingredients, as declared: Poultry Meal (min. 28%), Maize, Brown Rice (min. 22%), Oats, Poultry Fat (min. 6%), Sugar Beet Pulp, Poultry Digest (min. 3%), Brewers Yeast, Linseeds, Minerals, Salmon Oil, Vitamins, Egg Powder, Herring Meal, L-Carnitine, Glucosamine (min. 0.035%), Methylsulphonylmethane (min. 0.035%), Prebiotic Manna-oligosaccharides (MOS), Prebiotic Fructo-Oligosaccharides (FOS), Chondroitin Sulphate (min. 0.025%), Yucca Schidigera Extract.

Poultry meal at a minimum of 28% supplies the protein backbone, concentrated enough to bring dry-matter protein to 26.1%, a moderate level suited to a steady large adult rather than a hard-working one. As ever with poultry, the label keeps its options open on which bird, and the fat and digest entries stay in the same anonymous family.

Maize, brown rice at a minimum of 22% and oats do the carrying, with estimated carbohydrate at 47.9% of dry matter, close to the 46.2% typical of adult dry food. Beet pulp handles the fibre.

The large-breed additions are the label's best work. Glucosamine and MSM at minimums of 0.035% each with chondroitin sulphate at 0.025% support heavy joints. L-Carnitine at 0.05% helps a big frame stay lean, and herring meal with salmon oil brings marine omega 3s that linseed alone could not.

Egg powder and brewer's yeast are useful smaller entries, part of the zinc, iron and copper arrives chelated, and the selenium is supplied as selenium yeast. What is missing is a calcium declaration, which on a large-breed food is the figure most worth chasing up with the maker.

For a 15kg adult dog in moderate condition the arithmetic gives about 235 grams and £0.78 a day, built on the standard maintenance estimate of roughly 840 kcal (110 × bodyweight^0.75). Treat that daily figure as a comparison guide, since a genuinely large dog will naturally eat more, and note the energy value behind it is estimated rather than declared.
