The strengths are easy to point at: beef declared in two forms, a calcium figure that stands up to large breed scrutiny, and a supplement tail measured out in milligrams per kilo. The starch share is the one line keeping it from pressing higher, and the ingredient notes below set out why.

Ingredients, as declared: beef protein (27 %), fresh beef (26 %), rice (25 %), beef fat (preserved with tocopherols, 9 %), dried apple pulp (7 %), hydrolysed yeasts (2 %), salmon oil (2 %), egg shells (a source of calcium, 1 %), pea flour, algae oil (0.3 %, Schizochytrium limacinum) dried blackcurrant (0.2 %), glucosamine (310 mg/kg), chondroitine sulphate (210 mg/kg), mannan-oligosaccharides (120 mg/kg), dried rosemary (100 mg/kg), dried thyme (100 mg/kg), Mojave yucca (80 mg/kg), fructo-oligosaccharides (70 mg/kg), inactivated bacteria and parts thereof (Lactobacillus helveticus HA - 122, 15 x 109 cells/kg).

Beef appears twice on this label and in two different states. Beef protein at 27% is a concentrated, water-free form, while fresh beef at 26% is weighed with its water still in, so the raw shares understate how much the concentrate puts into the finished kibble. Beef fat at 9% keeps the fat contribution on the same animal, and it is preserved with tocopherols, the natural vitamin E route rather than a synthetic antioxidant.

Rice at 25% is the starch and it is a straightforward, digestible cereal for a young dog. It does push the carbohydrate estimate to 44.9% of dry matter where the typical puppy dry food runs at 39.0%, so there is a fair quantity of cereal sitting behind the beef. Dried apple pulp at 7% adds a soft, fermentable fibre on top of it.

Egg shells at 1% are named as the calcium source, and the resulting figure converts to 1.21% of dry matter. In a food written specifically for large breed growth, that is the most important line on the label, because too much calcium during the fast months does as much harm as too little. Having it printed, sourced and in range is exactly what a big breed owner is shopping for.

The joint support is measured out where many labels only name-drop it, with glucosamine at 310 mg/kg alongside chondroitin sulphate at 210 mg/kg. That is the pairing owners of heavy dogs look for while a large frame is still being laid down.

Marine omega 3 arrives by two routes: salmon oil at 2%, then algae oil at 0.3%, a plant-sourced way to the same long-chain fats. Hydrolysed yeasts at 2% are broken down for easier absorption, and the gut package behind them runs to mannan-oligosaccharides at 120 mg/kg, fructo-oligosaccharides at 70 mg/kg and an inactivated Lactobacillus helveticus culture.

Dried rosemary and thyme at 100 mg/kg each, Mojave yucca at 80 mg/kg and dried blackcurrant at 0.2% finish the recipe, with rosemary doing double duty as a natural antioxidant. The vitamin panel behind them is fully dosed, and the trace minerals are largely in organic forms, zinc at 90 mg and iron at 75 mg per kilo among them. Organic forms tend to be better absorbed than their inorganic equivalents.
