Ingredients, as declared: chicken protein (40 %), rice (20 %), brewer's rice (12 %), poultry fat (5 %, preserved with tocopherols), apple pulp dried (5 %), hydrolysed poultry protein (5 %), dried beet pulp, yeasts, hydrolysed chicken liver (2 %), salmon oil (2 %), potassium chloride, fulvic acid (0.2 %), glucosamine (260 mg/kg), prebiotics (mannan-oligosaccharides 120 mg/kg, β-glucans 100 mg/kg, fructo-oligosaccharides 70 mg/kg), dried rosemary & thyme (200 mg/kg), chondroitine sulphate (160 mg/kg), Mojave yucca (80 mg/kg), Lactobacillus acidophilus HA - 122 inactivated (15 x 109 cells/kg).

The headline ingredient is chicken protein at 40%, a dried and concentrated form rather than fresh meat, which means the figure is not flattered by water that would cook away. On the finished analysis, protein converts to 28.6% of dry matter.

The starch here is rice at 20% and brewer's rice at 12%. Estimated carbohydrate works out at 46.7% of dry matter, in line with the 46.2% typical of adult dry food. The balance is a conventional one.

The neutered thinking runs through the small print. Fat is capped at 12%, unusual restraint for a chicken kibble. L-carnitine at 200 mg per kilo supports the conversion of fat into energy, the reason weight-conscious recipes reach for it. Fibre at 5%, with dried beet pulp and apple pulp supplying it, slows the bowl down and helps a dog feel properly fed.

Joint support is dosed rather than implied: glucosamine at 260 mg/kg and chondroitin sulphate at 160 mg/kg. Gut care gets the same treatment, with mannan-oligosaccharides at 120 mg/kg, beta-glucans at 100 mg/kg and fructo-oligosaccharides at 70 mg/kg feeding the friendly bacteria, plus an inactivated Lactobacillus strain riding along.

The omegas come from salmon oil at 2%, and that is why a chicken food carries fish. The added trace minerals come in organic, chelated forms, generally the better-absorbed choice, and every one of them is dosed in print.
