Bounce and Bella Finest Grain-Free Adult Small Breed: Steam Cooked Salmon & Trout review

Both varieties land in our Good band, where the typical adult dry food settles too, and both sit above the middle of it. What earns the gap is the discipline the brand shows elsewhere: a majority share of named animal content with its split printed, restrained carbohydrate and dosed prebiotics. Here it arrives in a kibble sized for small jaws.

Both recipes put the animal first and show their working. Chicken makes up 55% of one and salmon with trout 53% of the other, each broken into freshly prepared, meal and stock so you can see how much survives cooking. Protein converts to 31.5% of dry matter in the chicken and 29.3% in the fish.

Carbohydrate is where these two stand out, an estimated 39.2% of dry matter for the chicken and 42.4% for the fish, both usefully below the 46.2% typical for adult dry food.

Fat runs at 15% as fed in both, making energy-dense bowls suited to quick little metabolisms; a small dog that mainly naps will need the portions watched.

Beet pulp and printed prebiotic doses look after digestion, linseed adds plant omega 3s, and the fish variety carries salmon oil at 4% for the marine kind. The unnamed omega 3 supplement and the undosed vitamins and minerals are the two soft spots on an otherwise open label.

This one is 53% salmon and trout: 27% freshly prepared fish, 20% salmon meal, 4% salmon oil and 2% stock, with asparagus in the tail. Every named animal here is fish, and the extra salmon oil gives it the stronger marine omega 3 story of the two.

Work from the standard maintenance estimate of about 840 kcal a day (110 × bodyweight^0.75). A 15kg adult dog in moderate condition would take around 226 grams of the chicken or 223 grams of the fish, £1.85 and £1.83 a day. The label's own guide runs from 1kg to 10kg dogs, the range this food is really aimed at, so scale down from there.
