Bella + Duke Complete Superfoods: Super Chicken review

The animal side is 80% and nothing about it is left vague: meat, tripe, liver, kidney, trachea and bone each carry a percentage. Tripe is a heavy presence again, and the organ shares are real ones. Organs hold much of an animal's micronutrition, so those shares count.

Vegetables account for 16%, and carrots, sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage take 3.2% each, with blueberries at 1%. Olive oil sits at 1% here, a proper pour rather than a drizzle, and kelp at 1% brings iodine and trace minerals. The fish tub swaps the Scottish kelp for Hebridean seaweed, which does the same job.

The tail is what gives the range its name. Organic turmeric sits at 0.3%, dried algae at 0.1% for omega 3, organic ginger at 0.1%, spirulina at 0.05%, beet pulp at 0.04% and organic ground black pepper at 0.03%. Black pepper is turmeric's traditional partner in a kitchen, and it is no accident that the two sit side by side here.

Those printed percentages deserve credit. At 0.3% and below a botanical is seasoning, and Bella + Duke shows that plainly on the label. The meat is still the reason the food works.

Additives are declared per kilo. Vitamin D3 is 400IU in most tubs and 350IU in the chicken and turkey, with none printed on the fish; vitamin E is 30mg, or 40mg in the fish recipe. Iron is 5mg, zinc 25mg, manganese 25mg and copper 0.75mg, with copper at 1.25mg in the chicken and turkey and manganese at 35mg in the fish, all of them chelates of protein hydrolysates.

On the analysis, protein converts to between 46.4% and 64.0% of dry matter and fat to between 22.0% and 38.5%. The carbohydrate estimate runs from 0.5% up to 8.5%, around the 5.0% raw food typically shows. Bone sits at 3% in every tub and is where the calcium comes from, though the range prints no figure for it.

Chicken at 56% with grass-fed lamb at 24% supplying tripe, liver, kidney and trachea. Fat converts to 22.1% of dry matter, among the leanest here, at 105 kcal per 100g, so the bowls are generous.

Every tub is £6.74 a kilo, sold as 500g tubs inside subscription boxes of 4kg, 8kg, 12kg, 16kg and 20kg.

On the standard maintenance estimate, a 15kg adult dog in moderate condition needs about 840 kcal a day (110 × bodyweight^0.75), which puts a day's feeding between £3.96 and £7.08. The rate per kilo is identical across the six, so that spread is energy density alone.
