Barkin Bistro

Barkin Bistro Raw 80:10:10: Venison review

84.9/100Outstanding
RawPuppyAdult

Raw feeding at its plainest: one animal, its meat, its organs and usually its bone, five times over. Four sit in our Outstanding band and the Turkey in Excellent. For a dog on an exclusion diet, that plainness is the whole attraction.

Our view

Likely to suit

  • Exclusion diets. Each mince names one animal and nothing else
  • A dog the usual meats have upset, with venison and pork novel for most
  • Raw feeders who want the organs itemised: liver, kidney, pancreas, spleen
  • Working cuts such as heart, tripe and tongue, a long way from a plain mince
  • Mixed-age homes, with four of the five listed for puppies, adults and seniors

Worth watching

  • No vitamin or mineral additives on any of the five, so the organs and bone do all of that work
  • Freezer storage and raw hygiene: wash hands, bowls and surfaces after every meal

Dog fit

Listed for every size, and for puppies through seniors on all but the Turkey. For a dog fed a single mince for life, ask Barkin Bistro for the calcium behind the bone share; only the Lamb prints it.

The score, in context
  1. Lamb 86.8
  2. Pork 86.8
  3. Venison 84.9
  4. Beef 84.8
  5. Turkey 75.6

Five recipes across Outstanding and Excellent. Typical raw food: Outstanding.

Four of the five keep pace with the strongest field we score, and the Turkey falls a step behind on transparency.

A natural first choice for a dog being moved to a meat it has never met.

Five raw minces, each one animal from first word to last, built roughly four fifths muscle, a tenth organs and a tenth bone. There are no vegetables, no oils and no vitamin or mineral additives anywhere, so the organs carry the micronutrition. What varies is how each label reaches the split: the Beef and Venison state it, the Lamb builds it from named cuts, and the Pork lists no bone at all.

Protein converts to between 51.0% and 68.7% of dry matter and fat between 15.5% and 56.1%. Only the Lamb prints a calcium figure.
