Our Excellent band is where this recipe sits with us, a step above the Good finish of the typical adult dry food. What earns it is refreshingly ordinary: a majority share of named chicken, restrained carbohydrate and joint doses printed on the label rather than hinted at in the marketing.

Chicken accounts for 50.4% of the recipe, built from chicken meal at 36.4% and freshly prepared chicken at 14%. Because the meal arrives already dried, the headline holds up after cooking: protein finishes at 37%, or 40.7% of dry matter, a strong figure for any kibble, let alone a senior one. Estimated carbohydrate converts to 31.1% of dry matter against a category typical of 46.2%.

That protein level is a deliberate stance. Muscle usually goes before appetite does in an older dog, and a meat-rich bowl supplies the amino acids to hold onto it, with egg powder and dried brewer's yeast pushing in the same direction.

The senior touches are practical ones. Glucosamine steps up to 400 mg/kg with chondroitin sulphate at 300 mg/kg, and salmon oil at 1.5% brings marine omega 3s. The prebiotic pairing of FOS from chicory and MOS from yeast wall looks after an older digestion. Potato and dried peas keep the starch entirely grain free.

The trailing botanicals, seaweed through to paprika, are a garnish and never the point, alongside two inactivated Lactobacillus cultures at 0.005% each. Vitamins and minerals are declared as one collective line, so individual doses stay off the bag.

Feeding lands near 224 grams a day for a 15kg adult in moderate condition, using our standard estimate of about 840 kcal a day (110 × bodyweight^0.75). The label's table suggests 140 to 240 grams across the 10kg to 20kg span. Measure to the dog you actually have.
