Akela Wet Working Dog Food: Kangaroo review

87.8/100Outstanding
WetPuppyAdult

Cans built for dogs that burn through their dinner, with four recipes in our Outstanding band and Fish Feast in Excellent. Every animal on the five labels is named with a percentage beside it. At 116 to 119 kcal per 100g they are energy-dense for wet food.

Our view

Likely to suit

  • Working and sporting dogs
  • Owners who want every animal named, salmon and herring through to reindeer
  • A single named meat: the Kangaroo keeps its meat to kangaroo
  • Dogs that have worked through the usual proteins, with venison, wild boar and reindeer on the shelf
  • A puppy and an older dog fed from the same can
  • Dogs that never drink enough. Roughly three quarters of the can is water

Worth watching

  • Green-lipped mussel in Spring Lamb, Original and Fish Feast, so those are not shellfish free
  • Prawn in Fish Feast
  • No figure for the joint compounds on the mussel recipes
  • No added vitamin and mineral panel on Spring Lamb

  • Asparagus, carrots, green beans

  • Borage oil, prebiotic FOSBorage oil brings gamma-linolenic acid; FOS feeds the gut bacteria.
  • Glucosamine, chondroitin sulphate100mg/kg eachPrinted, with nothing left to the mussel.

Vitamin D3 at 200 IU/kg, with zinc, manganese and iodine dosed beside it.

The label does not say where its glucosamine and chondroitin come from, a question for a strict single-meat trial.

The recipe for a dog that needs one meat and one meat only.

Every recipe leads on freshly prepared meat or fish at 65% or more, each animal named with a percentage, and none has grain. Only Fish Feast carries a starch ingredient. The rest of the plant side is berries, vegetables and coconut at modest levels, then a long trace-level herbal finish shared by all five.

Joint support comes two ways: Kangaroo and Wild Game print glucosamine and chondroitin, the other three use green-lipped mussel with no figure. The added panel is brief on four labels and missing on Spring Lamb. Protein converts to between 42.0% and 43.6% of dry matter.
