Sneyd's Wonderdog Wonderdog Grain Free Chicken & Potato Wet review

This tray earns our Excellent band. The typical adult wet food is Excellent too, so read the placement as a solid member of a strong class and nothing more.

Chicken at 60% with no meat and animal derivatives anywhere behind it does most of the work here. Protein converts to 40.0% of dry matter and fat to 36.0%, a rich and meat-forward balance. The label prints its own energy figure at 119 kcal per 100g and spares us an estimate.

What holds it back are smaller things. The potato has no percentage against it, and neither do the peas or the carrot. The trace element panel stops at three entries. The starch ingredients sit higher in the list than the carbohydrate estimate alone would lead you to expect. None of that changes what is in the bowl, which is a well-made chicken tray.

Ingredients, as declared: Chicken (60%), Dried Potato, Dried Peas, Dried Carrot, Potato Starch, Sunflower Oil, Salmon Oil (0.2%), Tomato Pomace, Chicory, Yucca Schidigera (0.015%), Dried Blackcurrant, Dried Rosemary, Pomegranate.

Chicken at 60% is the one meat here, and the label names it outright. That is the single most useful thing a wet label can do. Protein converts to 40.0% of dry matter and fat to 36.0%, so this is a rich tray by wet-food standards and a satisfying one for a dog with a real appetite.

The plant side is drier than it first looks. Dried potato comes second, with dried peas and dried carrot behind it, and all three arrive with their water already removed. An ingredient in that position is doing more work in the tray than a fresh version would. Potato starch follows them. It is pure starch with none of the nutrients of the whole vegetable, and at this point in the list its job is binding the recipe.

Two oils are named. As plant oils in pet food go, sunflower oil sits near the top, with little saturated fat and vitamin E of its own. Salmon oil at 0.2% brings a small amount of marine omega-3. That salmon oil is also the reason this tray cannot be treated as chicken and nothing else, which matters for a dog on a fish-free plan and matters not at all for everybody else.

The last few entries are the interesting ones. Tomato pomace is the skin and pulp left after pressing and brings soluble fibre, chicory supplies inulin as a natural prebiotic, and yucca schidigera at 0.015% is the usual inclusion for keeping the garden pleasant. Dried blackcurrant, dried rosemary and pomegranate are antioxidant flourishes at trace level, with the rosemary most likely earning its place as a natural preservative.

The added panel is printed in full as far as it goes. Vitamin A at 3000 IU, vitamin D3 at 350 IU and vitamin E at 40 mg lead it. Zinc at 25 mg, iron at 20 mg and manganese at 3.75 mg per kilo follow. Copper and iodine do not appear, and while a meat-led tray carries a good deal of both in the chicken itself, a fuller panel would leave less to work out.

£7.57 a kilo, in 395g trays sold singly and in cases of 6, 12 and 18.

As a guide, a 15kg adult dog in moderate condition would eat around 706 grams a day, at about £5.34. Behind that sits a figure of 840 kcal a day (110 × bodyweight^0.75, the standard maintenance estimate). The label's own guide for a dog between 11kg and 20kg is 395 to 790 grams a day, so the estimate sits comfortably inside it.
