Tuggs Pork Power review

93/100Outstanding
FreshPuppyAdult

Tuggs Pork Power is fresh food, gently cooked and portioned into pouches, and it takes an unusual route to its protein. Pork is declared at 42.5% and broken into heart at 20%, trimming at 15% and liver at 7.5%, with fresh insect standing behind it at 20%. Sweet potato, carrot and broccoli carry the plant side, quinoa adds a seed protein at 4%, and small entries of kelp, chia and brewer's yeast finish the list. Every ingredient is named and carries a figure, the pouch is listed from puppies through to seniors, and it sits in our Outstanding band.

Our view

Likely to suit

This pouch deserves a proper look if fresh feeding appeals and your dog has been round the everyday meats already.

  • Dogs with a chicken or beef reaction in their past, because pork and insect are proteins most bowls never reach for
  • Owners who want the meat share itemised, since heart, trimming and liver all carry their own figure
  • Households feeding a young dog and an old one, because a single pouch covers puppies, adults and seniors
  • Fussy eaters, who tend to meet a soft gently cooked food with far more enthusiasm than a dry one
  • Owners with one eye on the planet, since farming insects takes nothing like the land or the water livestock does

Worth watching

Fresh feeding brings a few habits of its own, and they are much easier to plan for than to discover.

  • Pouches need fridge or freezer room, and a frozen one has to be defrosted before it becomes dinner
  • Fish appears on this label as salmon oil, and a household avoiding fish should note it
  • Insect is genuinely new to most dogs, so bring it in gradually alongside the current food
  • Owners raising a large breed puppy will not find a calcium figure printed here, so that is one to put to Tuggs directly

The score, in context

Fresh food is the strongest company a recipe can keep on our scoring, and Pork Power keeps it comfortably, landing in our Outstanding band with protein and processing, nutritional balance and transparency all reading Outstanding. The typical fresh food is Outstanding too, and within that group this pouch comes out a shade ahead of the middle. On the strongest shelf we score, that is no small thing.

Ingredient notes

The pork is itemised rather than lumped together, with heart at 20%, trimming at 15% and liver at 7.5%. Liver this far up a list is a real asset, since it carries vitamin B12, vitamin A, copper and selenium at levels muscle meat cannot reach. Heart is lean working muscle with plenty of protein in it. Pork is also uncommon in British bowls. For a dog who has worked through the everyday meats, that is exactly the point.

Insect is the second protein here. It arrives fresh at 20% and it is there to do a job, not to dress up the packaging. Insect protein is well established in pet food now, and it is farmed with a fraction of the resources a mammal needs. Hardly any dog has a history with it, so a reaction to it is rare.

The plant side is a short one, and every entry on it is named. The main starch is sweet potato at 12%. Carrot at 8.75% brings soluble fibre and the antioxidants that travel with it, and broccoli follows at 8%. Quinoa at 4% is a pseudo-grain, the seed of a spinach relative rather than a grass, so it lifts protein and fibre while the label stays clear of cereals altogether.

Fresh food declares its analysis wet, so the figures look modest until the water comes out of them. With moisture at 70.7%, protein converts to 42.7% of dry matter and fat to 36.2%, while the carbohydrate estimate settles at 13.3%. That is a properly meat-led profile and a rich one, so a quieter dog is better fed towards the lower end of the guide than the top of it.

Small entries close the list off and each one has a job. Sunflower oil at 1.5% covers vitamin E and omega 6, salmon oil at 0.25% the long chain omega 3s, brewer's yeast at 1% the B vitamins, and kelp and chia sit at 0.5% each. Vitamins and trace elements are printed dose by dose, and the label also gives a calcium to phosphorus ratio of 1.3:1, a sensible balance even though the calcium percentage itself is left off.

Price and value

Pouches run 300g, 500g and 700g, and a box holds 5, 10 or 15. A subscription portions to the dog, not to a set box.

As a portion guide, a 15kg adult dog in moderate condition works through roughly 583 grams a day, based on about 840 kcal a day from the standard maintenance estimate of 110 × bodyweight^0.75. Fresh food is mostly water, so a daily weight like that is meant to read far larger than a dry scoop would.
