Orygo Senior Pate review

Our Excellent band is a crowded place in wet food, since the typical adult wet food is already in it. This can goes past it into our Outstanding band rather than settling beside that middle mark. The reasons are ordinary and honest: nine tenths of the recipe is named animal, each animal carries a share, and once the water comes out protein reaches 49.0% of dry matter. Three readings come back Outstanding: protein and processing, nutritional balance and transparency.

Ingredients, as declared: 90% Fresh Meat and Fish (55% Fresh Chicken, 30% Fresh White Fish, 5% Chicken Liver), Lentils 4%, Tapioca, Beet Fibre, Orygoformula 2.6% (Products Resulting from Yeast Fermentation, S. Cerevisiae, Turmeric Longa, Olive Oil, Inulin, Chicory Pulp, Sage, Quinoa, Mint, Fennel, Yucca Mojave, Rosemary, Oregano, Thyme, Valerian, Cranberry Extract, Pomegranate Extract, Milk Thistle, Liquorice, Aloe Vera Without Aloin, Extract Artichoke, Prooil, Egg Membrane, Trout Oil 500 mg/kg).

Fresh chicken at 55% is the backbone. In a wet food that phrase usually takes in the organs and connective tissue alongside the muscle meat. That is a natural and nutritious thing for a dog to eat, even if it is not what the words picture. No meat is used more widely in the trade than chicken, so it is a poor choice only for the dogs who have already reacted to it.

Fresh white fish at 30% is a real second pillar, not a nod, and it brings the lighter protein and marine oils that suit an older frame. The species is left open, which is the label's one piece of vagueness in an otherwise itemised list. Chicken liver at 5% adds vitamin A and copper, along with the B vitamins that make liver such a useful inclusion at small percentages.

Lentils at 4% are the distinctive plant entry here. They carry fibre and plant protein. There is iron and zinc in them too, along with B vitamins. They are slower to release their starch than a cereal, and they leave a dog feeling fuller, which is a help for a senior on smaller portions. Beet fibre works alongside them, and between the two crude fibre converts to 8.1% of dry matter. Tapioca is present as a binder and is starch with little else to offer. There is plainly not much of it, though: the estimated carbohydrate lands at zero once the rest of the analysis is accounted for.

The 2.6% Orygoformula block is the same across the brand. Inside it are yeast fermentation products, quinoa, olive oil and turmeric, with inulin and chicory pulp. Sage, mint, fennel, rosemary and thyme sit there too, with cranberry and pomegranate extracts, artichoke, aloe vera, milk thistle, egg membrane and trout oil at 500 mg/kg. Inulin and the yeast fractions are proper prebiotics, and an older gut appreciates them, but at this share none of it is a dose you would rely on.

On minerals this label pulls ahead of most wet food. Iron at 87 mg/kg, zinc at 41, manganese at 8.8, copper at 3 and iodine at 1.4 are all printed, with vitamins A, D3 and E given figures too. Calcium converts to 1.21% of dry matter. Ash at 8.1% of dry matter reflects that mineral content, no surprise in a recipe that carries liver and fish alongside a full added panel.

For portion planning, a 15kg dog in moderate condition needs about 660 grams a day. That comes from the standard maintenance estimate of 110 × bodyweight^0.75, roughly 840 kcal for a dog of that weight, and it works out at a little over a can and a half.
