Our scoring lands this in the Outstanding band, which is the same word the raw field's midpoint carries, so it holds its own in the strongest company we cover. A single named fish at close to three fifths of the recipe, used whole rather than filleted, and a plant list where every entry is named and numbered, are what carry it there.

Ingredients, as declared: Whole Atlantic Herring 58.7%, White Mushrooms 13%, Organic Sweet Potato 8%, Organic Courgette 6%, Organic Red Cabbage 6%. Organic Basil 3%. Organic Non-Fortified Nutritional Yeast 2.2%, Cooked Blue Mussels 1.3%, Cooked Oysters 1%, Organic Cold-Pressed Hempseed Oil 0.70%, Organic Wheatgrass 0.15%, Wild-Grown Seaweed 0.03%.

Whole Atlantic herring at 58.7% means the whole fish: flesh, oil and bone in one ingredient. Most recipes have to add the long chain omega 3 fats back in, and oily fish of this kind brings them already. The bone is where the calcium comes from, since no mineral premix is printed anywhere on this label.

Single source is a fair description of the animal side, with one qualification. Cooked blue mussels at 1.3% and cooked oysters at 1% are shellfish, so a dog reacting to shellfish is not covered by a fish-only promise even though no second fish or meat appears. For a dog being trialled off poultry, beef or lamb, the label does precisely what it claims.

White mushrooms at 13% are the most unusual entry on the list. Mushrooms bring B vitamins, a little fibre and a savoury depth that dogs tend to take to. At that inclusion they are doing real work in the recipe, not garnishing it.

Organic sweet potato at 8%, courgette and red cabbage at 6% each and organic basil at 3% fill out the plant side, with non-fortified nutritional yeast at 2.2% and cold pressed hempseed oil behind them. Organic wheatgrass and wild grown seaweed close the list at trace level, the seaweed carrying the iodine.

The analysis reads leaner than raw usually does and carries more carbohydrate. Protein converts to 49.4% of dry matter and fat to 23.9%. Carbohydrate is estimated at 14.7%, against a raw median of 5.0%. The sweet potato and the mushrooms account for most of that, and at 124 kcal per 100g this is a light food that portions generously.
