The typical adult wet food reads Excellent, as wet food does well on our scoring, and this box holds that same band on merit. Declaration is what does it. All three recipes put a percentage against every ingredient, and the meat is named outright. The estimated carbohydrate of 14.0% of dry matter comes in under the 15.8% that is normal on the wet shelf.

Each recipe leads with named meat to 60%. Beef and chicken take 30% apiece in the mixed recipe. The other two each carry a single meat, one of them chicken and one turkey. There is nothing more useful a wet label can do than name the animal and print its share, and all three of these do it without hedging.

Behind the meat the starch is deliberately light and fully quantified. Dried potato at 4% is equivalent to 17% fresh potato, dried peas at 1.5% to 4.7% peas, and dried carrot at 0.65% to 5.7% carrot, with a little potato starch to bind. Carrot and peas bring fibre and antioxidants with them, while potato starch is doing a structural job rather than a nutritional one.

Salmon oil and sunflower oil come in at 0.2% each. That is a modest amount, enough to contribute to the fat in the analysis without being the reason you would choose the food. The salmon oil is where the omega-3 in these recipes comes from.

Then the trimmings: dried tomato, chicory root at 0.1% as a source of inulin, yucca at 0.015%, and blackcurrant, citrus extract, rosemary and pomegranate at 0.005% each. Chicory is the one with a job to do, since inulin acts as a prebiotic fibre, and rosemary at that level is more often about keeping the fat fresh than anything else. The rest sit at trace level and read as decoration.

The analysis stands up next to the list. Protein converts to 40.0% of dry matter and fat to 28.0%, a genuinely meat-led profile. Declared energy is 110 kcal per 100g, a little above the 97 kcal typical of adult wet food.

The one real gap is the additive panel. Minerals appear as a single line, with no doses printed for the individual vitamins and trace elements. On a label this forthcoming, that is a shame.
