The Good band is our reading here, matching the ordinary adult dry food, and this is still the one that needs the most context. On the analysis alone it is a well aimed weight recipe: protein converts to 27.3% of dry matter, fat to 12.0%, and estimated carbohydrate to 41.8% against the 46.2% typical of adult dry food. Energy sits at 317 kcal per 100g where 357 is the norm. What the ingredient reading cannot warm to is the way the bulk is made, with cellulose and pea bran meal padding out the volume and maize protein meal lifting the protein figure. For an overweight large dog on a measured ration, the food still does what its name promises.

Ingredients, as declared: Chicken and turkey meal (chicken 10%; total poultry 15%), maize, maize protein meal, pea bran meal, wheat, broken rice, cellulose, digest, dried tomato pomace, flaxseed, animal fat, dried beet pulp, coconut oil (2.2%), minerals, dried carrots.

The meat leads for once. Chicken and turkey meal is the first ingredient, 10% chicken inside 15% total poultry. The label names both birds, and since the meal went in dried, that declared figure survives into the kibble. On a food this light on calories, having the animal content at the front is exactly where you want it.

Maize and maize protein meal take the next two places. Maize protein meal is a concentrated plant protein and it is doing real work behind the 25.1% on the analysis, so the headline protein is not all bird. That is common enough in weight recipes, where the fat has to come out and something has to hold the protein up, but it is worth reading the number with that in mind.

Three ingredients carry the bulk: pea bran meal, cellulose and dried beet pulp, and between them they push crude fibre to 11.9%, which converts to 12.9% of dry matter. Beet pulp and pea bran are proper food fibres. Cellulose is the awkward one, a purified powder that is indigestible by design and adds volume and nothing more, and it is the entry a careful label reader will like least. Its purpose is honest enough, which is to let a hungry dog have a full bowl on a reduced ration.

Fat is held to 11.0%, and coconut oil at 2.2% is the notable choice among what remains. It is made largely of medium chain fatty acids, and the body handles those differently from ordinary long chain fats. Flaxseed brings the plant omega 3s along. Dried tomato pomace and dried carrots round the list off at trace level, carrots being a genuinely useful little addition and the pomace mostly more fibre.

The rest of the analysis backs the brief. Estimated carbohydrate sits at 41.8% of dry matter against the 46.2% typical of adult dry food, energy at 317 kcal per 100g against a typical 357, and calcium at 0.98% of dry matter. Every trace mineral is dosed in print, zinc at 131 mg per kilo, iron at 74.8 mg, copper at 7.4 mg, manganese at 7.7 mg, iodine at 1.8 mg and selenium at 0.2 mg.
