Our scoring puts this in our Good band, where the typical adult dry food sits too. What lifts it is plain enough. Half the bag is named turkey with every part of it printed, protein converts to 31.5% of dry matter, and carbohydrate stops at 42.4% where the typical dry food runs at 46.2%. The label gives the joint trio a dose, not a wave. That is the sort of detail that separates a large breed recipe written with intent from one that simply wears the name.

Turkey at 50% is broken into four printed parts: 28% freshly prepared turkey, 18% dried turkey, then turkey fat and turkey stock at 2% each. The oven drives the water out of freshly prepared meat, so the dried 18% is doing much of the finished kibble's work. The named turkey fat is a small mark of confidence, because a maker with nothing to hide says which animal the fat came from. Protein finishes at 29%, or 31.5% once moisture is taken out. That is a strong figure for a food at this shape.

The starch is sweet potato, 24% of the recipe, with peas at 7% and potato after them. Beet pulp at 6% adds fibre. Beet pulp is the fibre most kibbles reach for because it is gentle, mostly fermentable and good at keeping stools firm. That is no small thing when the dog producing them weighs as much as you do.

The joint work is the point of this recipe and it is done properly. Glucosamine and methylsulfonylmethane are dosed at 170mg/kg each, chondroitin sulphate at 125 mg/kg. Glucosamine and chondroitin are both natural components of cartilage, and adding measured helpings on top of what the meat supplies is the standard approach for heavy dogs whose joints carry more load for longer.

Two entries are worth reading honestly. Pea protein and potato protein are refined plant proteins, useful to a manufacturer for the numbers they add and much less useful to a dog than meat protein. They sit well down the list here, behind the meat and the vegetables, so they read as a top-up rather than a substitute.

Linseed brings plant omega 3 and sits alongside an entry called omega 3 supplement, which is not tied to a source in print. The prebiotic pair is measured properly, fructo oligosaccharide at 96 mg/kg and mannan oligosaccharide at 24 mg/kg, both there to feed the friendly bacteria further down the gut. Cranberry at 0.2% is the finishing touch and no more than that. The trace minerals are dosed in full, including zinc at 50mg and copper at 15mg.

As a guide, take a target of about 840 kcal a day for a 15kg adult dog in moderate condition (110 × bodyweight^0.75, the usual maintenance estimate). That is roughly 229 grams, or about £0.99 a day. A big dog will eat more than that, so scale the portion to your own and let the waistline confirm it.
